Source: Pali Kanon: Pali Proper NamesAn elephant of the king of Kosala. He was once very strong, but as he grew old he became weak and, one day, stuck fast in the mire. The elephant trainer, by the kings orders, went to the elephant arrayed as for battle and caused the battle drum to be beaten. The elephants pride was roused and he rose from the mire. v.l. Theravāda is a major branch of Buddhism having the the Pali canon (tipitaka) as their canonical literature, which includes the vinaya-pitaka (monastic rules), the sutta-pitaka (Buddhist sermons) and the abhidhamma-pitaka (philosophy and psychology).
