把握 [bǎ wò] [ba wo]—
1. Shake hands, hold hands with each other. From "Divine Qi" (神氣 [shen qi]) chapter of "Zihua Zi" (子華子 [zi hua zi]) by Cheng Ben (程本 [cheng ben]) of the Jin (晉 [jin]) Dynasty: "People of today's world (今世之人 [jin shi zhi ren]), in their usual state (平居 [ping ju]), grasp hands and whisper in ears (附耳 [fu er]), making agreements (然約 [ran yue]) with each other (相為 [xiang wei]) and protecting themselves (自保 [zi bao])."
2. Grasp, control. For example: "seize the opportunity" (機會 [ji hui]), "make good use of time" (光陰 [guang yin]).
3. Confidence in success. From Chapter 53 (第五三回 [di wu san hui]) of "A Short History of Civilization" (文明小史 [wen ming xiao shi]): "If you are afraid of not having confidence (沒有 [mei you]), why not go to Shanghai (上海 [shang hai]) first to meet that mining engineer (礦師 [kuang shi]) and sign a contract (合同 [he tong]) with him."
4. A handful. From "Discourses of Chu (Part Two)" (楚語下 [chu yu xia]) of "Discourses of the States" (國語 [guo yu]): "The King (王 [wang]) said: 'What about their size (大小何如 [da xiao he ru])?' Replied: 'The sacrifices at the suburban altars (郊禘 [jiao di]) are no bigger than cocoons (繭 [jian]) or chestnuts (栗 [li]), and the autumn (烝 [zheng]) and winter (嘗 [chang]) sacrifices are no bigger than a handful.'"
