颰陀劫 [ba tuo jie]—(Bhadrakalpa)—【術語 [shu yu] (Term)】Bhadrakalpa, also known as 波陀劫 [bo tuo jie] (Bodhakalpa). It is an abbreviation of Bhadrakalpa. 劫簸 [jie bo] (kalpa) refers to the time period that distinguishes the formation and destruction of worlds. The current one is precisely the kalpa of formation. It is often abbreviated as 劫 [jie] (kalpa). 颰陀 [ba tuo] (Bhadra) is translated as 賢 [xian] (virtuous) or 善 [shan] (good). During this kalpa, a 千佛 [qian fu] (thousand Buddhas) will appear, hence it is named 賢劫 [xian jie] (Virtuous Kalpa). 智度論 [zhi du lun] (Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra), Chapter 38, states: " 劫簸 [jie bo] (kalpa) in 秦言 [qin yan] (Qin language) means 'distinguishing time divisions,' and 颰陀 [ba tuo] (Bhadra) in 秦言 [qin yan] (Qin language) means 'good.' There were tens of millions of kalpas in the past where no Buddhas appeared. In this one kalpa, a thousand Buddhas will arise, and the 諸淨居天 [zhu jing ju tian] (Pure Abodes Devas) rejoice, hence it is called the Good Kalpa." 修行本起經 [xiu xing ben qi jing] (Sutra on the Practice of the Fundamental Origins), Upper Volume, states: "The kalpa is named 波陀 [bo tuo] (Bodha), which in 漢言 [han yan] (Han language) means 賢 [xian] (virtuous)." 法華文句 [fa hua wen ju] (Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra), Chapter 8, states: "颰陀 [ba tuo] (Bhadra) here means 聖 [sheng] (sacred); it is merely another name for kalpa." 賢劫經 [xian jie jing] (Bhadrakalpa Sūtra), Chapter 1, states: "三昧 [san mei] (Bhadrakalpa Samādhi), in 晉 [jin] (Jin Dynasty), was translated as 賢劫定意 [xian jie ding yi] (Virtuous Kalpa Samādhi)."
