颰陀 [ba tuo]—Bhadra — [Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa])]. Also written as Bhadra (跋陀 [ba tuo]) or Bhadra ([車 [che](乏 [fa]-之 [zhi]+犮 [ba])]陀 [tuo]). An abbreviation of Bhadrapāla (和羅 [he luo]). Name of a Bodhisattva. See the entry for Bhadrapāla (跋陀婆羅 [ba tuo po luo]). According to Xuanying's "Sounds and Meanings" (玄應音義 [xuan ying yin yi]), Volume 5: "Bhadra is sometimes written as Bhadra ([車 [che](乏 [fa]-之 [zhi]+犮 [ba])]跋拔 [ba ba]) in the sutras. All three forms are pronounced similarly to 'pú mò' (蒲沫 [pu mo]). This [term] is translated as 'Benevolent and Virtuous' (仁賢 [ren xian]) or 'Virtuous Protector' (賢護 [xian hu])."
