Avaṣṭambh (अवष्टम्भ्).—5, 9. P.

1) To lean or rest upon; धनुरवष्टभ्य (dhanuravaṣṭabhya) Mv.5; so दण्डम् (daṇḍam); प्रकृतिं स्वामवष्टभ्य (prakṛtiṃ svāmavaṣṭabhya) Bhagavadgītā (Bombay) 9.8 by the help of; वृद्धां भार्यामवष्टभ्य (vṛddhāṃ bhāryāmavaṣṭabhya) Rām. on account of.

2) To block up; कोसलनृपतेर्द्वारमवष्टभ्य (kosalanṛpaterdvāramavaṣṭabhya) Ratnāvalī 4.

3) To wrap, envelop, cover with; K.116; तिमिरेणावष्टभ्यमाने जीवलोके (timireṇāvaṣṭabhyamāne jīvaloke) 159; occupy; Daśakumāracarita 159.

4) To support, prop, hold up; clasp, embrace; अवष्टभ्यासौ माम् (avaṣṭabhyāsau mām) Mv.5.5; क्रोडविभागेन मामवष्टभ्य (kroḍavibhāgena māmavaṣṭabhya) K.33,42,54.
