(to āvarjayati, q.v.; see also āvar- janā; substantially as in Sanskrit, once, das Sich-geneigt- Machen, Gewinnen, [Boehtlingk and Roth] 5.1123), wrongly defined for Lalitavistara and Divyāvadāna in [Boehtlingk]; attraction, winning to oneself: Lalitavistara 250.(7—)8 (dhyānagocarāṇāṃ ca rūpāvacarāṇāṃ) ca devānām dhyā- naviśeṣopadarśanād āvarjanaṃ kuryām (by performing severe austerities; said by the Bodhisattva); 250.22 devānāṃ cāvarjanārtham; Mahāvastu ii.423.18 āvarjana-saṃ- panno (Senart doué de bonne grâce, d' affabilité; i.e. gifted with winning ways; followed by mārdavasaṃpanno apa- ruṣo); especially (compare āvarjayati) conversion: Bodhisattvabhūmi 180.5—6 āvarjanārhāṇāṃ sattvānām āvarjanāya (contrasts with preceding uttrāsanārhāṇāṃ sattvānām uttrāsanāya); often this is accomplished by miracles, because, as Divyāvadāna 133.9 says, āśu pṛthagjanāvarjanakarī ṛddhiḥ, magic converts the vulgar quickly; virtually the same words 192.8; 313.15; 539.5; Bodhisattvabhūmi 80.6 and 82.5 ṛddhy-āvarjanatā, process of conversion by (exhibitions of) magic; Avadāna-śataka i.9.12 tad atyad- bhutaṃ devamanuṣyāvarjanakaraṃ prātihāryaṃ dṛṣṭvā; the same ii.4.4—5 etc.
