Ativṛt (अतिवृत्).—1 A. (P. in epic poetry)

1) To pass over or by, cross (as a place &c.). उपासते पुरुषं ये ह्यकामास्ते शुक्रमेतदतिवर्तन्ति धीराः (upāsate puruṣaṃ ye hyakāmāste śukrametadativartanti dhīrāḥ) Muṇḍ.3.2.1.

2) (a) To go beyond, exceed (fig. also); वाग्विभवातिवृत्तमाचार्यकम् (vāgvibhavātivṛttamācāryakam) Mālatīmādhava (Bombay) 1. 26 exceeding or transcending the powers of speech, indescribable; मुकुलावस्थामतिवृत्तेषु तण्डुलेषु (mukulāvasthāmativṛtteṣu taṇḍuleṣu) Daśakumāracarita 132; का ते स्तुतिः स्तुतिपथादतिवृत्तधाम्नः (kā te stutiḥ stutipathādativṛttadhāmnaḥ) Mv.4.29 transcending praise. (d) To have no regard to, disregard, slight; offend (especially by unfaithfulness), injure; शपथशतातिवर्ती (śapathaśatātivartī) Daśakumāracarita 62 disregarding; ऋतुस्नातां सतिं भार्यां (ṛtusnātāṃ satiṃ bhāryāṃ) ... अतिवर्तेत दुष्टात्मा (ativarteta duṣṭātmā); यथाहं कर्मणा वाचा शरीरेण च राघवम् । सततं नातिवर्तेय (yathāhaṃ karmaṇā vācā śarīreṇa ca rāghavam | satataṃ nātivarteya) Rām. अपत्यलोभाद् या तु स्त्री भर्तार- मतिवर्तते (apatyalobhād yā tu strī bhartāra- mativartate) Manusmṛti 5.161.

3) (a) To surpass, excel; मनुष्य-- संख्यामतिवर्तितुं वा (manuṣya-- saṃkhyāmativartituṃ vā) Kirātārjunīya 3.4; एष जनतातिवर्तिनो (eṣa janatātivartino) Śiśupālavadha 14.59; बान्धवस्नेहं राज्यलोभोऽतिवर्तते (bāndhavasnehaṃ rājyalobho'tivartate) Kathāsaritsāgara 41.4; to outweigh, preponderate. (b) To overcome, subdue, vanquish, get the better of; get over, escape or get loose from; असाध्यानतिवर्तन्ते प्रमेहा रजनीं यथा (asādhyānativartante pramehā rajanīṃ yathā) Suśr.; किमाचारः कथं चैतांस्त्रीन् गुणानतिवर्तते (kimācāraḥ kathaṃ caitāṃstrīn guṇānativartate) Bhagavadgītā (Bombay) 14.21 transcend these three qualities; दैवं पौरुषेण° (daivaṃ pauruṣeṇa°) Mb., Daśakumāracarita 73, Kathāsaritsāgara 121.67.

4) (Intrans.) To pass away, glide away, elapse (as time); to be late or delay; एवं तयोः प्रत्यहमन्योन्याहारादि दानेन कालोऽतिवर्तते (evaṃ tayoḥ pratyahamanyonyāhārādi dānena kālo'tivartate) H.1; महता स्नेहेन कालोऽतिवर्तते (mahatā snehena kālo'tivartate) H.2; समयो नातिवर्तते (samayo nātivartate) Mv.6; आषोड- शाद् ब्राह्मणस्य सावित्री नातिवर्तते (āṣoḍa- śād brāhmaṇasya sāvitrī nātivartate) Manusmṛti 2.38 is not late (nātikrāntakālā bhavati).

5) To go away from, leave, abandon (abl.); यथा मे हृदयं नित्यं नातिवर्तति राघवात् (yathā me hṛdayaṃ nityaṃ nātivartati rāghavāt) Rām. -Caus.

1) To slight, not to heed, disregard सुहृदश्चाति- वर्तिताः (suhṛdaścāti- vartitāḥ) Daśakumāracarita 136.

2) To let out, discharge (as excrement).
