Atghara in South 24 Paragana district is an explored site revealing Kushan presence.—This small village, located on 22°22' latitude and 88°28' longitude lies close to the bed of river Adi-Ganga, only 17 km from Calcutta. This site is located under the jurisdiction of Baruipur Police station in South 24 Pargana. Asutosh Musuem .Calcutta conducted an exploration which yielded various types of early historic antiquities analogous to those from Tamluk, Harinarayanpur, Chandraketuagrh and other places have been discovered (Biswas, 1981).

The archaeological materials from Atghara suggest that this site was inhabited from Maurya-Sunga to Pala-Sena period though no proper cultural sequence has been ascertained so far. The major findings are N.B.P. ware bowl, perforated tiles of Maurya period, beads of semiprecious stones, terracotta figurines, black and red ware pottery, grey carrinated bowl, terracotta beads, round cast copper coins, yakshis and warrior of elegance and dignity, bone objects probably belongs to Kushan period.(
