Shilpashastra (iconography)
Source: Shodhganga: The significance of the mūla-beras (śilpa)Aruvam-valipādu refers to “spirit worship” and represents one of the main systems of worship in Tamilnadu.—The ancient śilpis have classified the revelation of the Primary Energy into three states [viz., avyakta/niṣkala (amorphic/non-manifest)]. The Sanskrit word avyakta or niṣkala is called aruvam in Tamil. It is the abstract state of formlessness, where the different parts of the body and other physical attributes are undefined and represented in an amorphous state. This state is said to be all–pervasive and luminous in nature. The liṅga comes under this category.
Shilpashastra (शिल्पशास्त्र, śilpaśāstra) represents the ancient Indian science (shastra) of creative arts (shilpa) such as sculpture, iconography and painting. Closely related to Vastushastra (architecture), they often share the same literature.
