Ārohaṇagrāsa (आरोहणग्रास) or simply Ārohaṇa refers to one of the ten types of (solar and lunar) eclipses (grāsa), according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 5), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “If immediately after the termination of the eclipse, the disc should be re-eclipsed (by comets and the like), it is technically known as Ārohaṇa (climbing) [i.e., ārohaṇagrāsa]: the princes will be at war and there will be fear in the land.. If a small portion of the disc should be so slightly eclipsed as to resemble a mirror covered with the vapour of hot breath, the eclipse is known as Āghrāta (smelling): there will be good rain in the land”.

Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
