Source: Wisdom Library: Āyurveda and botanyArkādi (अर्कादि) is the Sanskrit name for a group of medicinal plants, classified as acting as a vermifuge, and a specific asceptic agent amongst other properties. It was originally composed by Suśruta in his Suśrutasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna XXXVIII, a classic work on Āyurveda. The name is derived from the words Arka (Asclepias gigantea) and ādi, translating to “first” or “commencement”. Examples of plants pertaining to this category include Arka, Karañja, Nāgadantī, Rasmā and Indrapuṣpī, etc. The collection of herbs named Arkādi is but one of the thirty-seven gaṇas (‘sections’) of such groups.

Traditional practice of Āyurveda in ancient India dates back to at least the first millenium BC. Literature is commonly written in Sanskrit using various poetic metres.
