Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationAputratva (अपुत्रत्व) refers to “issueless”, which is mentioned as an item of wealth in order to demonstrate the wicked nature of gambling (durodara), according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.1.17.—Accordingly, “[...] better to be issueless (aputratva) than have a wicked son (kuputra) who defiles the entire family (kulapāṃsana). It is the traditional policy to abandon one to save the family. The Brāhmaṇa took his bath, performed his daily rites and married the daughter of a Vedic scholar the same day”.
