Apsumati (अप्सुमति):—[bahuvrihi compound] (?)…[The meaning of the word is not given anywhere, to my knowledge; its form is mentioned in the Vārtt. apoyāniº to Pāṇ. Vi. 3. 1., but on its correctness the doctors disagree: Nagojibh. (who alone of the older comm. on Pāṇini subjects it to a remark) finds that it is a proper form, but states at the same time that some believe it a wrong reading in the Bhāṣya instead of apsumat (aff. matu); Bhaṭṭojid. in the Prauḍham., on the other hand, denies flatly its occurence in Patanjali or anywhere else; Nagojibh.: apsumatiriti . vṛttiharidattādayastu vārttike matuṣviti paṭhitvā apsumantāvājyabhāgāvityudāharanti (see apsumat 2.) . bhāṣyepyevameva pāṭhaḥ . dṛśyamānapāṭhaḥ . dṛśyamānapāṭhastu lekhakapramādāditi tadanuyāyinaḥ . halonantara iti sūtre (I. 1. 7.) . harigranthe tu apsumatirityeva pāṭho dṛśyate yuktaṃ caitat; Prauḍham.: yattu prācā matiṣviti paṭhitvā apsumatirityudāhṛtaṃ tadbhāṣyādau na dṛṣṭam. The E. I. H. Mss. 326 of the Mahābh. on Pāṇ. Vi. 3. 1. and 2441 of the Kāś. on Pāṇ. Vi. 3. 18. read also ºmatiṣu and apsumatiḥ, but Ms. 831 of the Kāś.: ºmatuṣu and apsumantau.]—E. apsu (loc. plur. of ap) and mati.

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
