Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by VarahamihiraApradīpa (अप्रदीप) refers to “without a lamp”, according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 2), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “[...] As is the night without a lamp [i.e., apradīpā] and the sky without the sun, so is a prince without a Jyotiṣaka and he gropes his way in the dark. If there were no Jyotiṣakas, the muhūrtas, the tithis, the nakṣatras, the ṛtus and the āyanas would go wrong”.
