Apehisvāgatā (अपेहिस्वागता):—[bahuvrihi compound] f.

(-sā) A festival or ceremony where undesired or uninvited people are denied admission. See the explanation s. v. apehivāṇijā. (This meaning is hypothetical; but as all the similar formations mentioned in the last named article imply the shutting out of undesired objects, it will seem that svāgata is either to be taken in this compound as su-āgata ‘welcome’ in an ironical sense—comp. e. g. satya, sādhu—, or as sva-āgata ‘come on one’s own account, uninvited’.) E. apehi (imper. of i with apa) and svāgata, scil. kriyā.

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
