Apāyavicaya (अपायविचय).—One of the four types of virtuous (dharmya) meditation.—What is meant by ‘concentrating on objects of misfortune / calamity’ (apāyavicaya)? To contemplate on the sufferings of self and others and the ways and means of getting rid of them is called concentrating on objects of misfortune / calamity.

Apāyavicaya (अपायविचय) refers to the “examination of suffering”, according to the 11th century Jñānārṇava, a treatise on Jain Yoga in roughly 2200 Sanskrit verses composed by Śubhacandra.—Accordingly, “The wise say that meditation which is the examination of suffering (apāyavicayaapāyavicayaṃ dhyānaṃ tad) is the method that is taught by the sages wherein there is destruction of karma”.
