Apavāhana (अपवाहन).—

1) Taking or carrying away, removal; Daśakumāracarita 41; स्वराष्ट्रं वासयेद्राजा परदेशापवाहनात् (svarāṣṭraṃ vāsayedrājā paradeśāpavāhanāt) H.3. v. l. bearing away men from other countries; See अभिष्यन्द (abhiṣyanda).

2) Deduction, subtraction (as of fractions).

3) Name of a metre.

(-nam) (In Arithm.) The same as apavāha 1.; e. g. jānāsyaṃśānubandhaṃ cettathā bhāgāpavāhanam ‘if thou knowest the addition and subtraction of fractions’. [In the passage of the Hitopad. ed. Schlegel and Lassen: svarāṣṭraṃ vāsayedrājā paradeśāpavāhanāt, the ed. of Johnson reads the latter word paradeśāpahāraṇāt.] E. vah in the caus., with apa, kṛt aff. lyuṭ.
