The name is derived from the words virecana, translating to “an oily enemata”, and upaga, referring to “belonging to”. It is a technical term used throughout Āyurveda. Examples of plants pertaining to this category include Rasnā (Vanda roxburghii), Śālapuṣpa (Rucedanum sowa), Aśvadaṃṣṭrā (Tribulus terrestris) and Agnimantha (Premna spinosa). The collection of herbs named Anuvāsanopaga is one of the fifty Mahākaṣāya.
