Antyāvasāyin (अन्त्यावसायिन्).—m., f. (°yī, °yinī) a man or woman of the lowest caste, begotten by a chāṇḍāla on a Niṣādī woman; निषादस्त्री तु चाण्डालात्पुत्रमन्त्यावसा- यितम् । स्मशानगोचरं सूते बाह्यानामपि गर्हितम् (niṣādastrī tu cāṇḍālātputramantyāvasā- yitam | smaśānagocaraṃ sūte bāhyānāmapi garhitam) || Manusmṛti 1.39; the following 7 are regarded as belonging to this class; चाण्डालः श्वपचः क्षत्ता सूतो वैदेहकस्तथा । मागधायोगवौ चैव सप्तैतेऽ- न्त्यावसायिनः ॥ सोऽहमन्त्यावसायानां हराम्येनां प्रतिगृहात् (cāṇḍālaḥ śvapacaḥ kṣattā sūto vaidehakastathā | māgadhāyogavau caiva saptaite'- ntyāvasāyinaḥ || so'hamantyāvasāyānāṃ harāmyenāṃ pratigṛhāt) Mahābhārata (Bombay) 12.141.41. see अन्तेवसायिन् (antevasāyin).

Antyāvasāyin (अन्त्यावसायिन्):—[tatpurusha compound] m.

(-yī) A man of a degraded tribe, the offspring of a Niṣādī woman by a Chāṇḍāla male. According to Angiras this term comprehends seven classes, viz. cāṇḍāla, śvapaca, kṣattṛ, sūta, vaidehaka, māgadha and āyogava qq. vv.; Vijnāneśvara applies it to Chāṇḍālas and men who have become outcastes in general: ‘cāṇḍālapatitādīnām’. Comp. antāvasāyin and antyaja. E. antya and avasāyin lit. ‘engaged in the lowest occupations’.
