Antibiotic Medicine was commonly used in the treatment of Elephants in India, according to the Hastyayurveda: an ancient Sanskrit text dealing with the branch of Ayurveda for “elephants” including remedies and medical science.—Dirty stables are the causes of feet diseases. Hastyayurveda describes 30 kinds of padarogas (feet diseases) and its treatments. [...] The commonly seen disorders of foot in elephants are deep wounds, itching, fungal infections found in between and around nails, edges and underneath foot etc. At this time not wash the foot; and keep it cleanly, use antiseptic lotion daily at once. Now it is washed in formalin liquid and used antibiotics and inject antibiotic medicine. The third chapter of Hastyayurveda describes it clearly. [...]
