They lie neglected and forgotten while men will turn their attention to the Suttantas of poets and the utterances of disciples, full of words; these they will learn and master instead of the Buddhas own teachings. Theravāda is a major branch of Buddhism having the the Pali canon (tipitaka) as their canonical literature, which includes the vinaya-pitaka (monastic rules), the sutta-pitaka (Buddhist sermons) and the abhidhamma-pitaka (philosophy and psychology).
