Ancient Rome and Ancient India are both connected through their literary history.—Roman poets like Virgil, Horace and Ovid (Ovid died in 17 A.D.) are only a little anterior to our Tamil poets Kapilar and Paranar and the whole host of them. Though the mode of poetry in the two countries varied it will be noted that a certain analogy does exist between the works. For one thing the fact that two countries so far separated as Italy and South India both by distance and racial differences (though to some the Dravidians also are a Mediterranean race) must first begin the art of poetry and attain a mastery not still surpassed is a fact to be explained. On the other hand, the Tamil literature of the period is only too full of references to the ancient Roman connections with South India and the plethora of the Roman coins of this period dug up in various places in South India only goes to further augment the reality of these connections.

Trading connection between ancient Rome and ancient India.—Mr. R. Sewell who has made a careful study of these coin finds posits a close trading connection between the two countries in the first three centuries of our era. We have evidences of Indian embassies sent to Caesar Augustus during the period which he is said to have received, according to Roman records, at Terragona (in Spain) in one case and the island of Cyprus in another.
