岸頭 [an tou]—(àn tóu)—[雜語 [za yu] (zá yǔ)] The shore of the 苦海之岸 [ku hai zhi an] (kǔ hǎi zhī àn) (sea of suffering). The 無門關 [wu men guan] (Wúmén Guān) (The Gateless Gate) states: "At the 生死 [sheng si](shēngsǐ àn tóu) (shore of life and death), one attains 大自在 [da zi zai] (dà zìzài) (great liberation/freedom)."

[zá yǔ] kǔ hǎi zhī àn. wú mén guān yuē: “yú shēng sǐ àn tóu, dé dà zì zài.”

Tang Dynasty, Du Fu's (杜甫 [du fu]) poem "Inscribing on the Works of Zheng the Eighteenth (題鄭十八著作丈 [ti zheng shi ba zhe zuo zhang])": "The poor alley is quiet, with no carriages or horses passing; on the desk, fireflies die while reading (讀書螢 [du shu ying])." From "Twenty Years Eyewitness to Strange Happenings (二十年目睹之怪現狀 [er shi nian mu du zhi guai xian zhuang])," Chapter 22: "Bo Shu (伯述 [bo shu]) picked up a book from the desk and handed it to me."
