安清 [an qing]—An Qing, courtesy name Shìgāo, was the crown prince of the King of Parthia (安息王 [an xi wang]). After his father passed away, he ceded the throne to his uncle and renounced the world to become a monk. He was widely versed in sutras and treatises (經論 [jing lun]) and traveled extensively to spread the teachings. He then came to China (中國 [zhong guo]). During the reign of Emperor Huan of Han (漢桓帝 [han huan di]), he arrived in Luoyang (洛陽 [luo yang]). With his exceptional intelligence and quick wit, he became fluent in Chinese (漢語 [han yu]).
