Alpāgnipitta (अल्पाग्निपित्त) refers to “(those elephants) having little (bodily) fire and gall”, according to the 15th century Mātaṅgalīlā composed by Nīlakaṇṭha in 263 Sanskrit verses, dealing with elephantology in ancient India, focusing on the science of management and treatment of elephants.—[Cf. chapter 5, “on marks of the stages of life”]: “17. With little (bodily) fire and gall (alpāgnipitta), and much wind; having stiff limbs, and rough skin; his limbs not very mobile, with abundant phlegm and faded color, now he has reached the seventh stage (saptamī)”.
