Source: Pali Kanon: Pali Proper NamesThera of Pagan. He wrote a Pali grammar, the Saddaniti, in 1154 (Gv.63; SvD.v.1238; Sas.74). He was tutor to King Narapatisithu of Pagan (Bode, 16).
The Gandha Vamsa calls him a native of Jambudipa (p.67), but his name occurs among the famous residents in the retired monastery of the northern plateau above Pagan, the cradle of Pali Burmese literature. Forchhammer Report, p.2; Jardine Prize Essay, p.34.
Theravāda is a major branch of Buddhism having the the Pali canon (tipitaka) as their canonical literature, which includes the vinaya-pitaka (monastic rules), the sutta-pitaka (Buddhist sermons) and the abhidhamma-pitaka (philosophy and psychology).
