He is known as the lord of beginnings and is traditionally invoked first, not only by Gaṇapati devotees, but also by devotees of any other god or goddess. At the beginning of a text, at the commencement of a classical dance performance or the opening song of a concert, even the initial shrine that is visited when one visits a temple, this is Gaṇeśa’s domain.
It is said that Lord Śiva first worshipped Gaṇeśa before he fought with the demon Tripura; that Lord Rāma first worshipped Gaṇeśa before he fought Rāvaṇa; that Ādiśeṣa first worshipped Gaṇeśa before he undertook to bear the entire earth on his back; that Indra first worshipped Gaṇapati before he vanquished Vṛtta; that Durga first worshipped Gaṇeśa before she killed Mahiśāsura; that Lord Kṛṣṇa first worshipped Gaṇapati before he set out to absolve himself of a false charge (of murdering Satrājita); that Lord Viṣṇu first worshipped Gaṇeśa before he sought the three steps from Bali; that Lord Brahmā first worshipped Gaṇapati before he began creation; and that Manmatha first worshipped Gaṇeśa before he commenced to charm humanity.
Ganapatya (गाणपत्य, gāṇapatya) represents a tradition of Hinduism where Ganesha is revered and worshipped as the prime deity (ishta-devata). Being a minor though influential movement, Ganapatya evovled, llike Shaktism and Shaivism, as a separate movement leaving behind a large body of literature.
