Adhyūḍha (अध्यूढ).—a. [adhi upari ūḍhaḥ]

1) Raised, exalted, elevated, hanging over. एतस्यामृच्यध्यूढ (etasyāmṛcyadhyūḍha) साम तस्मादृच्यध्यूढ (sāma tasmādṛcyadhyūḍha) साम गीयते (sāma gīyate) Ch. Up.1.6.1.

2) Abundant, increased, copious.

3) Rich, affluent.

-ḍhaḥ 1 Śiva.

2) The son of a woman pregnant before marriage; अध्यूढश्च तथाऽपरः (adhyūḍhaśca tathā'paraḥ) Mahābhārata (Bombay) 13.49.4.

-ḍhā A wife whose husband has married another wife and thus superseded her (adhivinnā q. v.). अध्यूढायाश्च यद् दुःखं साक्षिभिर्विहितस्य च (adhyūḍhāyāśca yad duḥkhaṃ sākṣibhirvihitasya ca) Mahābhārata (Bombay) 2.68.83.

(-ḍhaḥ-ḍhā-ḍhaṃ) 1. Very prosperous, thriving. 2. Much. m.

(-ḍhaḥ) A name of Siva. f.

(-ḍhā) A superseded wife, one whose husband has married others. E. adhi, and ūḍha borne, from vaha to bear, affix kta.

(-ḍhaḥ-ḍhā-ḍham) 1) Borne or placed over, elevated.

2) Very prosperous, thriving.

3) Much, excessive. Ii. m.

(-ḍhaḥ) A name of Śiva. Iii. f.

(-ḍhā) A superseded wife, one whose husband has married others. E. vah with adhi, kṛt aff. kta. The commentaries explain I. 2. as derived from adhi, in the sense of adhika and ūḍha; Ii. as the god by whom the world has been upheld ‘first’ and Iii. also as derived from adhi, in the sense of ‘first’ and ūḍhā married.
