Phala (फल, “ritualism”).—The ritualists (yajñikas) consider the Veda as a source book for the performance of rituals for obtaining material prosperity in this life and heaven after death. They considered that the efficacy was in the ritual itself, the gods being incidental to the process. A person who knows and repeats the mantras properly, and performs the prescribed ritual acts punctiliously will be able to control the gods and direct events.
