阿鼻 [a bi]—Avīci, 阿鼻旨 [a bi zhi]; 阿鼻脂 [a bi zhi]; 阿鼻至 [a bi zhi]; the last and deepest of the eight hot hells, where the culprits suffer, die, and are instantly reborn to suffering, without interruption 無間 [wu jian]. It is the 阿鼻地獄 [a bi de yu] (阿鼻旨地獄 [a bi zhi de yu]) or the 阿鼻焦熱地獄 [a bi jiao re de yu] hell of unintermitted scorching; or the 阿鼻喚地獄 [a bi huan de yu] hell of unintermitted wailing; its wall, out of which there is no escape, is the 阿鼻大城 [a bi da cheng].

阿鼻 [a bi]—Avīci – [Name of a realm] Avīci, also written as Abhijñā (旨 [zhi]). It is translated as "uninterrupted" (无间 [wu jian]). It is Avīci Hell (无间地狱 [wu jian de yu]). Nirvana Sutra (涅槃经 [nie pan jing]) Chapter 19 states: "Ā (阿 [a]) means 'without', bhī (鼻 [bi]) means 'interval'. There is no temporary joy in this interval, hence it is called 'uninterrupted' (无间 [wu jian])." It signifies suffering without interruption. It is one of the Eight Great Hells (八大地狱 [ba da de yu]) and is the place of most extreme suffering. Extremely wicked people fall into it. The Lotus Sutra (法华经 [fa hua jing]), Chapter on Introduction, states: "down to Avīci Hell (地狱 [de yu])." The Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya (俱舍论 [ju she lun]), Chapter on the World, states: "Below this Jambudvīpa (赡部洲 [shan bu zhou]), after twenty thousand [yojanas], there is the great Naraka (捺落迦 [na luo jia]) of Avīci (旨 [zhi]), with the same depth and width as before, meaning twenty thousand [yojanas] each. Therefore, its bottom is forty thousand Yojanas (踰缮那 [yu shan na]) away from here. Because suffering therein is uninterrupted (无间 [wu jian]), unlike the other seven great Naraka (捺落迦 [na luo jia]) where suffering is not constant, it is named 'Uninterrupted' (无间 [wu jian])." Xuanying's Glosses on Buddhist Terms (玄应音义 [xuan ying yin yi]), Chapter 25, states: "Abhijñā (旨 [zhi]), sometimes said as Abhijñā, also called Abhi Hell, or Avīci Hell (地狱 [de yu]), is one meaning, which translates to 'uninterrupted' (无间 [wu jian]). There are two types of 'uninterrupted': first, uninterrupted body (身无间 [shen wu jian]); second, uninterrupted suffering (受苦无间 [shou ku wu jian])." "Uninterrupted body" (身无间 [shen wu jian]) means constantly not dying and preserving a suffering life.
