Source: De Gruyter: A Buddhist Ritual Manual on AgricultureAbhiṣicya (अभिषिच्य) refers to “having sprinkled (ash-water)” (on one’s self), according to the Vajratuṇḍasamayakalparāja, an ancient Buddhist ritual manual on agriculture from the 5th-century (or earlier), containing various instructions for the Sangha to provide agriculture-related services to laypeople including rain-making, weather control and crop protection.—Accordingly, [as the Bhagavān teaches the offering of the root spell], “[...] Having enchanted ash-water twenty-one times, and having sprinkled (abhiṣicya) it [on himself], self-protection will be established. Having enchanted mustard seeds 108 times, and enchanted drinking water seven times at the time of the rumbling of clouds, one should throw mustard seeds towards the sky. Cloud-binding should be given in the sky. Facing the clouds all seized flowers and fruits fall onto the ground. [...]”.
