Abhinirmukta (अभिनिर्मुक्त).—a.

1) Left or quitted (by the sun when it sets).

2) One asleep at sunset and thus not doing the duties to be then performed. सूर्येणाभ्युदितो यश्च ब्रह्मचारी भवत्युत । तथा सूर्याभिनिर्मुक्तः कुनखी श्यावदन्नपि (sūryeṇābhyudito yaśca brahmacārī bhavatyuta | tathā sūryābhinirmuktaḥ kunakhī śyāvadannapi) || Mahābhārata (Bombay) 12.34.3.

Abhinirmukta (अभिनिर्मुक्त):—[tatpurusha compound] m. f. n.

(-ktaḥ-ktā-ktam) 1) Left, quitted.

2) One asleep at sunset. [The last meaning, given by the Amarak. and Hemach., owes its origin probably to Manu 2. 221. or a similar passage, where the word is to be joined with the word sūryeṇa, both words meaning literally ‘one left by the sun’, scil. while asleep (this ellipsis resulting from the preceding verse 2. 220.); the same remark applies to the meaning ‘one asleep at sunrise’, given by the Koshas to abhyudita, for in Manu 2. 221. the latter word is also to be coupled with sūryeṇa, when both these words mean literally: ‘one towards whom the sun has risen’ (scil. while asleep), the meaning towards of abhi in abhyudita resulting from the beginning of verse 220., where abhi is karmaprav. or the separable preposition, not the verbal prefix; Manu 2. 220. 221.: taṃ cedabhyudiyātsūryaḥ śayānaṃ kāmacārataḥ (v. l. kāmakārataḥ) . nimlocedvāpyavijñānājjapannupavaseddinam .. sūryeṇa hyabhinirmuktaḥ śayānobhyuditaśca yaḥ . prāyaścittamakurvāṇo yuktaḥ syānmahatainasā; and comp. Gotama, as quoted by Kullūka: sūryābhyudito brahmacārī tiṣṭhedaharabhuñjānobhyastamitaśca rātriṃ japaṃsāvitrīm. The comm. on the Amarak., however, appear to have lost sight of this origin of the meanings ‘asleep at sunset’ and ‘at sunrise’ of the named words, for Rāyamuk. e. g. gives the etymological meaning of abhinirmukta ‘completely free from feeling, evening work or design, i. e. completely insensible or disengaged’: abhi sarvato bhāvena sāyantanena karmaṇā niścayena muktaḥ; and he explains abhyudita as a deriv. of abhyudita with taddh. aff. ac, referring it to the Gaṇa to Pāṇ. V. 2. 127., when its literal meaning would be ‘having a sunrise’: abhyuditamabhyudayaḥ sūryasya tadyogādarśaādyac . bhuktā brāhmaṇā itivat (comp. Siddh. Kaum. fol. 186a, 1. 11).] E. muc with nir and abhi, kṛt aff. kta.
