Abhīkṣṇam (अभीक्ष्णम्):—Avyayībh.

1) Repeatedly, frequently (Amarak., Hemach., Ajayap., Śabdar. &c.); e. g. Suśruta: mūtre nikumbhārdhapalaṃ vipācya pibedabhīkṣṇaṃ kuḍavārdhamātram; or Bhaṭṭik.: icchantyabhīkṣṇaṃ kṣayamātmanopi na jñātayastulyakulasya lakṣmīm; or Sāhityad.: vinayati sudṛśo dṛśoḥ parāgaṃ praṇayini kausumamānanānilena . tadahitayuvaterabhīkṣṇamakṣṇordvayamapi roṣarajobhirāpupūre; or Kṣīrasv. and Vardhamāna (the author of the Gaṇaratnam.): abhīkṣṇamāsphālayatīva kumbham; or Bhāgav. Pur.: abhīkṣṇāvagāhakapiśāñjaṭilāṃkuṭilālakān . ātmānaṃ cogratapasā bibhratī cīriṇaṃ kṛśam.

2) Constantly, always (Amarak. &c.); e. g. Kṣīrasv.: abhīkṣṇaṃ vakti.

3) Much, exceedingly, eminently (Trik., Med., Śabdar. &c.); e. g. Kenopan.: athādhyātmaṃ yadetadgacchatīva ca manonena caitadupasmaratyabhīkṣṇaṃ saṃkalpaḥ (Śaṅkara: = bhṛśam).

4) Quickly; (Hem., Med., Śabdar.). [The word is said by some comm. on the Amarak. to be used also in the three genders; but this assertion appears to be founded only on the circumstance that it occurs in other Koshas also amongst the inflected words; its form, however, is always there abhīkṣṇam which might apply as well to an adj. as to an indecl.; e. g. Rāmāsrama: ajayastvabhīkṣṇaśabdamanavyayamapyāha . anavyayaprakaraṇapāṭhāt). E. That given by Rāmāśr., Bhanūjid. &c.: kṣṇu with abhi, kṛt aff. ḍam, and bhi being protracted because the form belongs to the pṛṣodarādi, is not very plausible; Yāska explains the word as a contraction of abhikṣaṇam; but as the protraction of the final vowel of abhi in compounds points either to a kṛt deriv. with ghañ or kvip or to the loss of a following a (comp. abhīka Ii. and abhīpat), the word is better considered as an Avyayībh. of abhi and akṣṇa. (It belongs to the Gaṇas svarādi Pāṇ. I. 1. 37. and brāhmaṇādi V. 1. 124.)
