Abhigṛhṇati (अभिगृह्णति).—(?) (°āti; Pali abhigaṇhāti, overcomes, once, see Critical Pali Dictionary which suggests em. to adhi°), excels, sur- passes: Mahāvastu ii.307.6, mss. abhigṛhṇanti (buddhā, raśmi- bhiḥ), Senart em. ati° (but ati-grah- in this sense is rare and doubtful in Sanskrit and does not occur in Pali); in next line 7 Senart reads atigṛhyate with one ms., the other reads abhigṛhniṣu; a pass. seems required but perhaps abhigṛhyate is to be read.

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
