阿羅邏迦藍 [a luo luo jia lan]—(Āluólúojiālán) — [Person's Name] Also written as 阿羅邏迦羅摩 [a luo luo jia luo mo] (Āluólúojiāluómó), 阿羅荼迦邏摩 [a luo tu jia luo mo] (Āluótúojiāluómó), 阿蘭迦蘭 [a lan jia lan] (Ālánjiālán), etc.
The Sutra on the Collection of the Buddha's Former Deeds (佛本行集經 [fu ben xing ji jing] Fó běnxíng jí jīng), Volume 21, states: "There was a hermit's place of cultivation, named Alara, with the surname Kalama."
Madhyama Agama (中阿含 [zhong a han] Zhōng Āhán), Volume 56, Rama Sutra (羅摩經 [luo mo jing] Luómó jīng), states: "At his prime, at the age of twenty-nine, (ellipsis) he then stayed with Alara Kalama."
Prajnaparamita Sutra (般若經 [ban ruo jing] Bōrě jīng), Volume 599, states: "Alara Kalama's son."
If based on these statements, then (Āluólúojiālán) is the full name for Alara. However, other sutras state that (Āluólúojiālán) refers to two people.
The Sutra on the Buddha's Former Deeds (佛本行經 [fu ben xing jing] Fó běnxíng jīng), Volume 3, states: "The Bodhisattva did not accept this Dharma of Alara, so he again went to Kalama to inquire about the Dharma, (ellipsis) abandoned Kalama's Dharma, and then arrived at the Nairanjana River."
Genealogy of Sakya (釋迦譜 [shi jia pu] Shìjiā pǔ), Volume 1, states: "There were two hermits, Alara and Kalama." (According to the theory of two people, Kalama seems to be Udraka Rāmaputra.)
