Ūrdhvapātana (ऊर्ध्वपातन) is the first sub-step of Pātana, which is the fifth of the eight purification steps of Pārada (mercury), also known as the Aṣṭasaṃskāra.—Take Pārada and Tāmra in the specified ratio and levigate with Jambīra-svarasa to prepare thick paste. Apply the paste over the lower pot of Ḍamarū-yantra and apply heat for 12 hours. Collect the Pārada settled at the upper pot gently. (see the Āyurvedaprakāśa 1.68-71: a Sanskrit work on Rasaśāstra written in the 16th-century by Mādhava).

Ūrdhvapātana (upward distillation) is the fourth step (saṃskāra) of process of purification of mercury, according to the Bhāvaprakāśa. Pulverised mercury is mixed with blue vitriol and iron pyrites and prepared in a Vidhyādharayantra.
