Chapter XXXV - The Nine Horrible Notions

Sūtra (cf. Pañcaviṃśatī, p. 19, l. 18–20, l. 2; Śatasāhasrikā, p. 59, l. 2–18). – The [bodhisattva-mahāsattva must cultivate] the nine notions (navasaṃjñā)[1] of the horrible:

  1. that of the bloated corpse (vyādhmātakasaṃjñā),
  2. that of the torn-up corpse (vidhūtakasaṃjñā),
  3. that of the bloody corpse (vilohitakasaṃjñā),
  4. that of the rotting corpse (vipūyakasaṃjñā).
  5. that of the corpse turning bluish (vinīlakasaṃjñā),
  6. that of the devoured corpse (vikhāditakasaṃjñā),
  7. that of the scattered corpse (vikṣiptakasaṃjñā),
  8. that of the corpse reduced to bones (asthisaṃjñā),
  9. that of the burned corpse (vidagdhakasaṃjñā).
