The Buddha Carita (Saddharma-pundarika) by Asvaghosa a famous Sanskrit text revolving around the live and exploits of the Buddha. The Buddha Carita (Buddhacarita) is written in the style of a Kavya (or Mahakavya, epic poetry) and extant original Sanskrit text consists of roughly 1,000 metrical verses.

परं हि हन्तुं विवशं फलेप्सया न युक्तरूपं करुणात्मनः सतः ।
क्रतोः फलं यद्यपि शाश्वतं भवेत् तथापि कृत्वा किमुपक्षयात्मकम् ॥ ६५ ॥

paraṃ hi hantuṃ vivaśaṃ phalepsayā na yuktarūpaṃ karuṇātmanaḥ sataḥ |
kratoḥ phalaṃ yadyapi śāśvataṃ bhavet tathāpi kṛtvā kimupakṣayātmakam || 65 ||

'To kill a helpless victim through a wish for future reward,—it would be an unseemly action for a merciful-hearted good man, even if the reward of the sacrifice were eternal; but what if, after all, it is subject to decay?
