The Buddha Carita (Saddharma-pundarika) by Asvaghosa a famous Sanskrit text revolving around the live and exploits of the Buddha. The Buddha Carita (Buddhacarita) is written in the style of a Kavya (or Mahakavya, epic poetry) and extant original Sanskrit text consists of roughly 1,000 metrical verses.

Verse 8.3

हयश्च सौजस्वि चचार कन्थकस्तताम भावेन बभूव निर्मदः ।
अलङ्कृतश्चापि तथैव भूषणैरभूद्गतश्रीरिव तेन वर्जितः ॥ ३ ॥

hayaśca saujasvi cacāra kanthakastatāma bhāvena babhūva nirmadaḥ |
alaṅkṛtaścāpi tathaiva bhūṣaṇairabhūdgataśrīriva tena varjitaḥ || 3 ||

And the horse Kanthaka, though he still went on bravely, flagged and had lost all spirit in his heart; and decked though he was with ornaments, he had lost all his beauty when bereft of his master.
