The Buddha Carita (Saddharma-pundarika) by Asvaghosa a famous Sanskrit text revolving around the live and exploits of the Buddha. The Buddha Carita (Buddhacarita) is written in the style of a Kavya (or Mahakavya, epic poetry) and extant original Sanskrit text consists of roughly 1,000 metrical verses.

दुःखे ऽभिसन्धिस्त्वथ पुण्यहेतुः सुखे ऽपि कार्यो ननु सो ऽभिसन्धिः ।
अथ प्रमाणं न सुखे ऽभिसन्धिर्दुःखे प्रमाणं ननु नाभिसन्धिः ॥ २९ ॥

duḥkhe 'bhisandhistvatha puṇyahetuḥ sukhe 'pi kāryo nanu so 'bhisandhiḥ |
atha pramāṇaṃ na sukhe 'bhisandhirduḥkhe pramāṇaṃ nanu nābhisandhiḥ || 29 ||

'If the deliberate choice of pain is a cause of merit, why should not that same choice be directed to pleasure? If you say that the choice of pleasure carries no authority, is not the choice of pain equally without authority?
