The Buddha Carita (Saddharma-pundarika) by Asvaghosa a famous Sanskrit text revolving around the live and exploits of the Buddha. The Buddha Carita (Buddhacarita) is written in the style of a Kavya (or Mahakavya, epic poetry) and extant original Sanskrit text consists of roughly 1,000 metrical verses.

Verse 7.28

आहारशुद्ध्या यदि पुण्यमिष्टं तस्मान्मृगाणामपि पुण्यमस्ति ।
ये चापि बाह्याः पुरुषाः फलेभ्यो भाग्यापराधेन पराङ्मुखत्वात् ॥ २८ ॥

āhāraśuddhyā yadi puṇyamiṣṭaṃ tasmānmṛgāṇāmapi puṇyamasti |
ye cāpi bāhyāḥ puruṣāḥ phalebhyo bhāgyāparādhena parāṅmukhatvāt || 28 ||

'If merit is gained by purity of food, then there is merit also in the deer; and in those men also who live as outcasts from all enjoyments, through being estranged from them by the fault of their destiny.
