The Buddha Carita (Saddharma-pundarika) by Asvaghosa a famous Sanskrit text revolving around the live and exploits of the Buddha. The Buddha Carita (Buddhacarita) is written in the style of a Kavya (or Mahakavya, epic poetry) and extant original Sanskrit text consists of roughly 1,000 metrical verses.

Verse 7.24

इहार्थमेके प्रविशन्ति खेदं स्वर्गार्थमन्ये श्रममाप्नुवन्ति ।
सुखार्थमाशाकृपणो ऽकृतार्थः पतत्यनर्थे खलु जीवलोकः ॥ २४ ॥

ihārthameke praviśanti khedaṃ svargārthamanye śramamāpnuvanti |
sukhārthamāśākṛpaṇo 'kṛtārthaḥ patatyanarthe khalu jīvalokaḥ || 24 ||

'Some undergo misery for the sake of this world, others meet toil for the sake of heaven; all living beings, wretched through hope and always missing their aim, fall certainly for the sake of happiness into misery.
