The Buddha Carita (Saddharma-pundarika) by Asvaghosa a famous Sanskrit text revolving around the live and exploits of the Buddha. The Buddha Carita (Buddhacarita) is written in the style of a Kavya (or Mahakavya, epic poetry) and extant original Sanskrit text consists of roughly 1,000 metrical verses.

Verse 7.18

एवंविधैः कालचितैस्तपोभिः परैर्दिवं यान्त्यपरैर्नृलोकम् ।
दुःखेन मार्गेण सुखं क्षियन्ति दुःखं हि धर्मस्य वदन्ति मूलम् ॥ १८ ॥

evaṃvidhaiḥ kālacitaistapobhiḥ parairdivaṃ yāntyaparairnṛlokam |
duḥkhena mārgeṇa sukhaṃ kṣiyanti duḥkhaṃ hi dharmasya vadanti mūlam || 18 ||

'By such penances endured for a time,—by the higher they attain heaven, by the lower the world of men; by the path of pain they eventually dwell in happiness,—pain, they say, is the root of merit.'
