The Buddha Carita (Buddhacarita) is written in the style of a Kavya (or Mahakavya, epic poetry) and extant original Sanskrit text consists of roughly 1,000 metrical verses.

Verse 3.26

puraṃ tu tatsvargamiva prahṛṣṭaṃ śuddhādhivāsāḥ samavekṣya devāḥ |
jīrṇaṃ naraṃ nirmamire prayātuṃ sañcodanārthaṃ kṣitipātmajasya || 26 ||

But then the gods, dwelling in pure abodes, having beheld that city thus rejoicing like heaven itself, created an old man to walk along on purpose to stir the heart of the king's son.
