After the World-Honored One had finished converting his mother and the other multitudes of gods in heaven, he returned to the human world to travel and convert people according to their affinities. He converted Shreshtika 樹提迦 [shu ti jia], Jivaka 耆婆 [qi po], Shuloma 首羅 [shou luo], Shuronu 輸盧那 [shu lu na], the householder's son Anga 央伽 [yang jia], the prince Abhayakumara 無畏王子 [wu wei wang zi], Nigrodha 尼瞿屢陀 [ni qu lu tuo], Shigupaka 尸利掘多迦 [shi li jue duo jia], and Nigantha Upali 尼揵憂波離 [ni qian you bo li], enabling them all to attain liberation. The king of Gandhara 乾陀羅 [gan tuo luo], whose name was Pushkarasarin 弗迦羅 [fu jia luo], heard the subtle Dharma and left his country to become a renunciant. The yaksha 鬼 [gui] Himavata 醯茂鉢低 [xi mao bo di] and Atavaka 波多耆利 [bo duo qi li] were tamed and converted on Vipula Mountain 毘富羅山 [pi fu luo shan]. The Brahmin 梵志 [fan zhi] Parayana 波羅延 [bo luo yan] was tamed and made to have faith by a subtle half-verse of meaning on Pashana Mountain 波沙那山 [bo sha na shan]. In the village of Thanamati 他那摩帝 [ta na mo di], there were Kutadanta 鳩吒檀躭 [jiu zha tan dan], the chief of the Brahmins, who extensively killed living beings in sacrifices. The Tathagata used his skillful means to convert him and make him enter the proper Way.
On Videha Mountain 毘提訶山 [pi ti he shan], there was a god of great power named Panchashikha 般遮尸呿 [ban zhe shi qu], who received the Dharma and entered a definite state. In the village of Vishnushtha 毘紐瑟吒 [pi niu se zha], he converted Nanda's mother 難陀母 [nan tuo mu]. In the city of Anga 央伽富梨 [yang jia fu li], he subdued the powerful god Purnabhadra 富那跋陀羅 [fu na ba tuo luo], Shuronadanda 輸屢那檀陀 [shu lu na tan tuo], and the fierce and powerful dragon. The king and his concubines all received the proper Dharma. After he had opened the gate of nectar, in the village of Dwarf 侏儒村 [zhu ru cun], he converted Kina 稽那 [ji na] and Shiloka 尸盧 [shi lu], who were seeking the joy of being born in heaven, and made them enter the proper Way.
In the village of Champa 脩侔村 [xiu mou cun], he manifested his divine powers to Angulimala 央瞿利摩羅 [yang qu li mo luo] and converted him immediately. There was a son of a great householder, Fuli Jivaka 浮梨耆婆男 [fu li qi po nan], who was very rich and wealthy, like Purnabhadra. He was converted in front of the Tathagata and extensively practiced generosity. In the village of Bhadra 跋提村 [ba ti cun], he converted Bhadrika 跋提梨 [ba ti li], as well as the two spirits, Bhadra and Bhadrakarma. In the city of Videha 毘提訶富利 [pi ti he fu li], there were two Brahmins. One was named Mahajiva 大壽 [da shou] and the other was named Brahmayu 梵壽 [fan shou]. He subdued them in a debate and made them enter the proper Dharma.
He went to the city of Vaishali 毘舍離城 [pi she li cheng] and converted the rakshasas 羅剎鬼 [luo sha gui], the Lichchhavi 離車師子 [li che shi zi] prince, and the multitudes of Lichchhavi people. He also converted Sacchaka 薩遮尼犍子 [sa zhe ni jian zi] and made him enter the proper Dharma. In Amalakakalpa 阿摩勒迦波 [a mo lei jia bo], there was a spirit named Bhadra 跋陀羅 [ba tuo luo], and Bhadrakaraka 跋陀羅迦 [ba tuo luo jia]. He also went to Alaka Mountain 阿臘山 [a la shan] and converted the spirit Alavaka 阿臘婆 [a la po], the two named Kumara 鳩摩羅 [jiu mo luo], and the three named Hastaka 訶悉多迦 [he xi duo jia]. He returned to Gaya Mountain 伽闍山 [jia du shan] and converted the spirit Gangana 絙迦那 [huan jia na], the yaksha Suchiloma 針毛夜叉 [zhen mao ye cha], and his sister's son. He also went to Varanasi 波羅奈 [bo luo nai] and converted Katyayana 迦旃延 [jia zhan yan]. Then, using his divine powers, he went to Shurpaka 輸盧波羅 [shu lu bo luo], where he converted the merchants and received their sandalwood hall, whose wonderful fragrance still remains.
He went to Maheshi 摩醯波低 [mo xi bo di] and converted the sage Kapila. The Muni 牟尼 [mou ni] resided there, and his feet left imprints on the stone. The imprints of his thousand-spoked wheel never wear away. He went to Parana 波羅那處 [bo luo na chu] and converted the spirit Varana 婆羅那鬼 [po luo na gui]. He went to the country of Mathura 摩偷羅國 [mo tou luo guo] and converted the spirit Gautama 竭曇摩 [jie tan mo]. In Tuvishtha 偷羅俱瑟吒 [tou luo ju se zha], he converted Ratnapala 賴吒波羅 [lai zha bo luo]. He went to the village of Veranja 鞞蘭若村 [bing lan ruo cun] and converted the Brahmins. In the village of Kalimasha 迦利摩沙 [jia li mo sha], he converted Saddhissarana 薩毘薩深 [sa pi sa shen], and also converted Agnivesha 阿耆尼毘舍 [a qi ni pi she]. He returned to the country of Shravasti 舍衛國 [she wei guo] and converted Gautama 瞿曇摩 [qu tan mo], Jatishrona 闍帝輸盧那 [du di shu lu na], and Daurga Atri 道迦阿低梨 [dao jia a di li].
He returned to the country of Kosala and converted the heretic teacher Pushkarasarin 弗迦羅婆梨 [fu jia luo po li] and the multitudes of Brahmins. He went to Sitavika 施多毘迦 [shi duo pi jia], a quiet and peaceful place, and converted the heretic sages, making them enter the path of the Buddha sages. He went to the country of Ashoka 阿輸闍國 [a shu du guo] and converted the spirits and dragons. He went to the country of Shabala 舍毘羅國 [she pi luo guo] and converted the two evil dragon kings, one named Kimbila 金毘羅 [jin pi luo] and the other named Karakanda 迦羅迦 [jia luo jia]. He also went to the country of Bhadra 跋伽國 [ba jia guo] and converted the yaksha named Virisha 毘沙 [pi sha], and the parents of Nakula 那鳩羅 [na jiu luo], as well as the great householder, making them have faith in the proper Dharma.
He went to the country of Kushambi 俱舍彌國 [ju she mi guo] and converted Ghoshila 瞿師羅 [qu shi luo], and the two upasikas 優婆夷 [you po yi], Pajjota 波闍 [bo du] and Uttara 欝多羅 [yu duo luo], and their companions. He successively converted many more upasikas. He went to the country of Gandhara and converted the dragon Abhara. He successively converted all beings, whether they moved in the air, on water, or on land, like the sun shining into the darkness.
At that time, Devadatta 提婆達 [ti po da] saw the Buddha's exceptional virtues, but his heart was filled with jealousy and he lost his concentrations. He used various evil means to destroy the proper Dharma and the Sangha. He climbed Mount Gridhrakuta 耆闍崛山 [qi du jue shan] and rolled a rock down to hit the Buddha. The rock split into two and fell to the left and right of the Buddha. On the king's main road, he released a wild, drunken elephant. The elephant roared like thunder, its courage swelled up like clouds, and it ran wildly like a storm. Its trunk, tusks, tail, and four feet could destroy anything they touched. It killed and injured people in the streets of the city of Rajagriha. The streets were strewn with corpses, and brains and blood flowed everywhere. All the men and women of the city were terrified and did not dare to leave their homes. The entire city trembled with fear, and only the sound of screams could be heard. Some ran out of the city, and some hid in caves.
When the Tathagata and his five hundred disciples arrived in the city for alms, people in the high towers and windows begged the Buddha not to proceed. The Tathagata's heart was peaceful and calm, without any fear. He only thought of the suffering of greed and jealousy and wished for all to be at peace. The multitudes of gods and dragons followed him as he gradually approached the wild elephant. The bhikshus fled and hid, and only Ananda was with him. Just as the various forms of phenomena are still of one nature, the drunken elephant, in its wild rage, saw the Buddha and its heart immediately sobered up. It threw its body down and bowed at the Buddha's feet, like Mount Tai 太山 [tai shan] collapsing. The Buddha's lotus-like palm touched its head, like the sun shining on a dark cloud. It knelt at the Buddha's feet, and the Buddha spoke the Dharma to it: "Elephant, do not harm a great dragon. It is difficult for an elephant to fight a dragon. If an elephant tries to harm a great dragon, it will not be born in a good place. Greed, anger, and ignorance are the intoxicants that are difficult to tame, but the Buddha has already tamed them. Therefore, you should now abandon greed, anger, and ignorance. You have already sunk into the mud of suffering; if you do not abandon it, you will sink even deeper."
When the elephant heard the Buddha's words, its drunkenness was removed and its mind was enlightened. Its body and mind found peace and joy, like a thirsty person drinking nectar. When the elephant had been converted by the Buddha, the people of the country were all joyful. They all praised this rare event and made various offerings. The inferior wholesome deeds became medium, and the medium wholesome deeds became superior. Those who had no faith developed faith, and those who had faith became even more firm. King Ajatashatru 阿闍世大王 [a du shi da wang], seeing the Buddha taming the drunken elephant, had a special thought in his heart and was even more respectful. The Tathagata used his skillful means and manifested various divine powers to tame sentient beings. According to their abilities, they entered the proper Dharma, and the whole country practiced wholesome deeds, like the people at the beginning of the kalpa. Devadatta, who had performed evil deeds, was now bound by his own actions. He who had once flown with divine powers now fell into the Avici Hell 無擇獄 [wu ze yu].
