At that time, in the royal family of King Shuddhodana (白淨王 [bai jing wang]), because of the birth of the holy son, the relatives and sons of noble families, and all the ministers were loyal and good. Elephants, horses, precious chariots, and the country's treasury of seven treasures (七寶器 [qi bao qi]) increased day by day, gathering as they were needed. Countless hidden treasures naturally appeared from the earth. Fierce white elephants (兇狂群白象 [xiong kuang qun bai xiang]) from the pure snow mountains (清淨雪山 [qing jing xue shan]) came of their own accord without being summoned, and were tamed without being trained.
All kinds of multicolored horses, with extremely adorned bodies, red manes, long slender tails, and leaping like they were flying, also came naturally at the right time from the wilderness. The cows, which were of a pure color, gentle, strong, and well-formed, with a calm pace and pure, fragrant milk, also gathered like clouds at the right time. Those who had hatred in their hearts became peaceful, those who were neutral became more pure and sincere, those who were naturally close became even more intimate, and all rebellions and transgressions were eliminated.
A gentle breeze came with timely rain, and there was no thunder. Planting did not depend on the season, and the harvest was twice as abundant. The five grains were fresh, fragrant, and delicious, soft, light, and easy to digest. All pregnant women had a peaceful and harmonious body. Except for those who accepted the four holy kinds, other people in the world had everything they needed and did not have the thought to seek anything else.
There was no arrogance, no stinginess or jealousy, and no hatred or harmful thoughts. All men and women were like the people at the beginning of the eon. The temples of the Devas, the monasteries, the gardens, the wells, and the ponds were all like heavenly objects, appearing naturally at the right time. There was no hunger in the country, and all wars and epidemics ceased. All the people in the country loved and respected their relatives.
They were happy with the love of the Dharma (法愛 [fa ai]), and did not have any defiling desires. They sought wealth righteously, and did not have greedy thoughts. They performed generosity for the sake of the Dharma (法 [fa]), and did not have the thought of seeking a reward in return. They cultivated the four Brahma-viharas (四梵行 [si fan xing]), and eliminated the thoughts of hatred.
In the past, King Manu (摩㝹王 [mo nou wang]) gave birth to the prince Suryabhadra (日光太子 [ri guang tai zi]). The whole country was blessed with good fortune, and all evils ceased at once. Now, when the king gave birth to this prince, his virtue was also the same. Because he had all the virtues, his name was Siddhartha (悉達羅他 [xi da luo ta]).
At that time, Queen Mayadevi (摩耶夫人 [mo ye fu ren]), seeing her son's adorned appearance like a heavenly child, with all the virtues complete, was so overjoyed that she passed away and was reborn in heaven. Mahaprajapati Gautami (大愛瞿曇彌 [da ai qu tan mi]), seeing the prince who was like a heavenly child, with a majestic and unique appearance, and that his mother had passed away, loved and nurtured him as if he were her own son. The son also respected her as if she were his mother.
Just as the light of the sun, moon, and fire gradually grows from a small light, the prince grew day by day, and his virtues and appearance were also like this. Priceless sandalwood (栴檀香 [zhan tan xiang]), the famous Jambu river gold (閻浮檀名寶 [yan fu tan ming bao]), and miraculous medicines of the Rishis were used as ornaments for his body. The neighboring vassal states, hearing that the king had given birth to a prince, offered various rare and precious gifts, cattle, sheep, deer, horses, and chariots, as well as precious ornaments, to please the prince's heart.
Although there were various ornaments and toys for children, the prince's nature was calm and composed. Although he was young in form, his heart was old. His heart dwelled in a high and supreme realm, and he was not defiled by worldly glory. He studied all the arts and skills, and surpassed his teachers with just one hearing.
The father king (父王 [fu wang]) saw his son's intelligence, which was far beyond the world's comprehension. He widely sought out a daughter from a famous noble family, who was educated in proper etiquette, had a dignified appearance, and was named Yashodhara (耶輪陀羅 [ye lun tuo luo]). He arranged for her to be the prince's wife to guide and keep his heart.
The prince's will was lofty and far-reaching, his virtue was abundant, and his appearance was pure and clear, like Brahma's eldest son Sanatkumara (舍那鳩摩羅 [she na jiu mo luo]). The virtuous empress was beautiful and had a graceful, wonderful appearance, as gorgeous as a heavenly queen. They lived together day and night in joy.
He built a pure palace, which was magnificent and extremely adorned. It stood high in the sky, soaring like an autumn cloud. The temperature was suitable for all four seasons, and he chose a good place to live according to the season. He was surrounded by female attendants who played musical instruments, and they played music like heavenly music. He did not let any impure sights or sounds get near him, to prevent him from having thoughts of厌世想 [yan shi xiang] renouncing the world. Just as the heavenly Gandharvas (犍撻婆 [jian ta po]) had a natural precious palace, with female musicians playing heavenly music, and their sights and sounds dazzled the heart and eyes, the Bodhisattva's (菩薩 [pu sa]) palace was also like this.
The father king (父王 [fu wang]), for the sake of the prince, lived a quiet life, cultivated pure virtues, and ruled with compassion and righteous Dharma (正法 [zheng fa]). He associated with the virtuous and kept away from evil friends. His heart was not defiled by love and affection, and he regarded desire as poison. He restrained his emotions and controlled his senses, and he eliminated frivolous thoughts. He had a gentle face and listened to lawsuits well, and his compassionate teachings satisfied the hearts of all. He taught and transformed the followers of other paths, and stopped all schemes of rebellion. He taught methods to save the world, and all the people attained peace and joy. "Just as my son is safe, all the people are also safe."
He made fire sacrifices and worshipped the gods, and bowed with his hands together, drinking moonlight. He bathed in the Ganges river, and washed his heart with the water of the Dharma (法水 [fa shui]). He prayed for blessings not for himself, but only for his son and all the people. His words of love were not without meaning. His words of meaning were not without love. His words of love were not untrue. His words of truth were not without love. Because of his shame and humility, he could not tell the truth. Regarding the things he loved and did not love, he did not rely on thoughts of greed and hatred.
His will was in silence and peace, and he settled disputes justly. He did not consider the merit of sacrificial rituals to be greater than the merit of settling a case. He saw that many people were begging, and he gave generously, more than they hoped for. He had no thoughts of war, and he used virtue to subdue his enemies. He disciplined one person and protected seven, departed from seven, and restrained five. He attained three knowledges, understood three, and knew two to renounce two. He found the crime of seeking love, and forgave the person who deserved death with compassion. He did not use harsh and evil words, but instructed with gentle words. He made sure to give them money and instructed them on how to make a living. He received and learned the path of the Rishis, and eliminated thoughts of hatred. His fame and virtue spread universally, and all evils in the world disappeared forever. The king cultivated clear virtues, and all his people followed and emulated him. Just as the heart of a person is peaceful and calm, all their limbs and senses follow.
At that time, the prince of Shuddhodana (白淨太子 [bai jing tai zi]) and his virtuous wife Yashodhara (耶輸陀 [ye shu tuo]) both gradually grew up, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Rahula (羅睺羅 [luo hou luo]). King Shuddhodana (白淨王 [bai jing wang]) thought to himself, "The prince has now had a son, and the lineage will continue for generations without end." The prince, having a son, will have the same love for his son as I do. I no longer have to worry about him leaving home, but I must strive to cultivate good deeds.
"My heart is now at great peace, no different from the joy of being in heaven, just like the path of the Rishi kings (仙王 [xian wang]) at the beginning of the eon. Love to perform pure deeds, and make sacrifices without harming life. Diligently cultivate supreme deeds. The king is supreme, and pure conduct is supreme. The family and treasures are supreme, and courage and skills are supreme. The prince's brilliance illuminates the world, like the thousand lights of the sun. The reason for being a king is to glorify his son. Glorifying his son is for his family, and glorifying his family is for his reputation. A high reputation leads to rebirth in heaven, and being in heaven leads to happiness. This happiness increases wisdom, and wisdom leads to understanding the path and spreading the righteous Dharma (正法 [zheng fa]).
"In the place of the reputations of the predecessors, he will receive and practice all the wonderful paths. I only wish that the prince will love his son and not leave home. When other kings in all countries have a son who is still young, they do not let him rule the country, fearing that he will become unrestrained. They let him indulge in worldly pleasures, and he will not be able to continue the royal lineage. Now that the king has given birth to a prince, he will let him indulge in the five desires as he wishes. He only wishes for him to enjoy worldly glory, and not for him to learn the path."
[2] 佛所行讚處宮品第二
時白淨王家, 以生聖子故,
親族名子弟, 群臣悉忠良.
象馬寶車輿, 國財七寶器,
日日轉增勝, 隨應而集生.
無量諸伏藏, 自然從地出,
清淨雪山中, 兇狂群白象.
不呼自然至, 不御自調伏,
種種雜色馬, 形體極端嚴.
朱髦纖長尾, 超騰駿若飛,
又野之所生, 應時自然至.
純色調善牛, 肥壯形端正,
平步淳香乳, 應時悉雲集.
怨憎者心平, 中平益淳厚,
素篤增親密, 亂逆悉消除.
微風隨時雨, 雷霆不震裂,
種殖不待時, 收實倍豐積.
五穀鮮香美, 輕軟易消化,
諸有懷孕者, 身安體和適.
除受四聖種, 諸餘世間人,
資生各自如, 無有他求想.
無慢無慳嫉, 亦無恚害心,
一切諸士女, 玄同劫初人.
天廟諸寺舍, 園林井泉池,
一切如天物, 應時自然生.
合境無飢餓, 刀兵疾疫息,
國中諸人民, 親族相愛敬.
法愛相娛樂, 不生染污欲,
以義求財物, 無有貪利心.
為法行惠施, 無求反報想,
脩習四梵行, 滅除恚害心.
過去摩㝹王, 生日光太子,
舉國蒙吉祥, 眾惡一時息.
今王生太子, 其德亦復爾,
以備眾德義, 名悉達羅他.
時摩耶夫人, 見其所生子,
端正如天童, 眾美悉備足,
過喜不自勝, 命終生天上.
大愛瞿曇彌, 見太子天童,
德貌世奇挺, 既生母命終,
愛育如其子, 子敬亦如母.
猶日月火光, 從微照漸廣,
太子長日新, 德貌亦復爾.
無價栴檀香, 閻浮檀名寶,
護身神仙藥, 瓔珞莊嚴身.
附庸諸隣國, 聞王生太子,
奉獻諸珍異, 牛羊鹿馬車,
寶器莊嚴具, 助悅太子心.
雖有諸嚴飾, 嬰童玩好物,
太子性安重, 形少而心宿.
心栖高勝境, 不染於榮華,
修學諸術藝, 一聞超師匠.
父王見聰達, 深慮踰世表,
廣訪名豪族, 風教禮義門.
容姿端正女, 名耶輪陀羅,
應娉太子妃, 誘導留其心.
太子志高遠, 德盛貌清明,
猶梵天長子, 舍那鳩摩羅.
賢妃美容貌, 窈窕淑妙姿,
瓌艷若天后, 同處日夜歡.
為立清淨宮, 宏麗極莊嚴,
高峙在虛空, 迢遰若秋雲,
溫涼四時適, 隨時擇善居.
伎女眾圍遶, 奏合天樂音,
勿隣穢聲色,
令生厭世想. 如天犍撻婆,
自然寶宮殿, 樂女奏天音,
聲色耀心目; 菩薩處高宮,
音樂亦如是. 父王為太子,
靜居修純德, 仁慈正法化,
親賢遠惡友, 心不染恩愛,
於欲起毒想, 攝情撿諸根,
滅除輕躁意, 和顏善聽訟,
慈教厭眾心. 宣化諸外道,
斷諸謀逆術, 教學濟世方,
萬民得安樂. 如令我子安,
萬民亦如是, 事火奉諸神,
叉手飲月光. 恒水沐浴身,
法水澡其心, 祈福非存己,
唯子及萬民. 愛言非無義,
義言非不愛, 愛言非不實,
實言非不愛. 以有慚愧故,
不能如實說, 於愛不愛事,
不依貪恚想. 志存於寂默,
平正止諍訟, 不以祠天會,
勝於斷事福. 見彼多求眾,
豐施過其望, 心無戰爭想,
以德降怨敵. 調一而護七,
離七防制五, 得三覺了三,
知二捨於二. 求情得其罪,
應死垂仁恕, 不加麤惡言,
軟語而教勅, 務施以財物,
指授資生路, 受學神仙道,
滅除怨恚心, 名德普流聞,
世間永消亡. 主匠修明德,
率土皆承習, 如人心安靜,
四體諸根從.
時白淨太子, 賢妃耶輸陀,
年並漸長大, 孕生羅睺羅.
白淨王自念, 太子已生子,
歷世相繼嗣, 正化無終極.
太子既生子, 愛子與我同,
不復慮出家, 但當力修善.
我今心大安, 無異生天樂,
猶若劫初時, 仙王所住道.
愛行清淨業, 祠祀不害生,
熾然修勝業, 王勝梵行勝.
宗族財寶勝, 勇健伎藝勝,
明顯照世間, 如日千光耀.
所以為王者, 將為顯其子,
顯子為宗族, 榮族以名聞,
名高得生天, 生天為樂已,
已樂智慧增, 悟道弘正法,
先勝名聞所, 受行眾妙道.
唯願令太子, 愛子不捨家,
一切諸國王, 生子年尚小.
不令王國土, 慮其心放逸,
縱情著世樂, 不能紹王種.
今王生太子, 隨心恣五欲,
唯願樂世榮, 不欲令學道.
過去菩薩王, 其道雖深固,
要習世榮樂, 生子繼宗嗣,
然後入山林, 修行寂默道.
