[0945b13] After Mahānāma (摩賀曩摩 [mo he nang mo]) had said these verses, he went to the north gate and asked in a loud voice, "Who is here, not sleeping and keeping watch?" Amṛtodana (甘露飯王 [gan lu fan wang]) replied, "I am here, not sleeping and keeping watch." Mahānāma (摩賀曩摩 [mo he nang mo]) said, "If one keeps watch without sleeping, there will be no faults," and he spoke these verses:

"The fear of sleep is as treacherous as a mountain,
And like crossing a river or the sea;
Focusing the mind to prevent dangers and crises,
Is also like stopping sleep."

「怖睡如山嶮,  亦如汎河海;

[0945b19] After Mahānāma (摩賀曩摩 [mo he nang mo]) had said these verses, he went to the marketplaces and streets, patrolling everywhere, making people aware to stop sleeping and keep watch. He spoke these verses:

"Abide by the Dharma, depart from what is not Dharma,
Speak the truth, do not speak falsehood;
King Śuddhodana (淨飯王 [jing fan wang]) is the most supreme,
Stop sleeping and keep watch."

「依法離非法,  實言勿妄言;

[0945b23] After Mahānāma (摩賀曩摩 [mo he nang mo]) had said these verses, as dawn approached, he went before King Śuddhodana (淨飯王 [jing fan wang]) and said, "A full day and night have passed, and there is peace both inside and outside, without any demonic difficulties. I pray, Great King, that you will again command your army to keep a vigilant watch for another seven days and nights, so that the prince (太子 [tai zi]) will surely attain the position of a cakravartin (輪王 [lun wang])." Thus, they guarded him for six days and nights. At that time, the lord of the Trāyastriṃśa (忉利天 [dao li tian]) heaven observed that the prince intended to go to the place of enlightenment and spoke these verses:

"Well done, great man!
Muni, the lion of the Śākya (釋 [shi]) clan;
He will surely abandon the royal palace,
And seek a place in the mountains and wilderness.
He will perfect the six pāramitās (六波羅蜜多 [liu bo luo mi duo]),
And achieve the supreme wisdom;
He will save all living beings,
And ultimately reach the other shore."

「善哉大丈夫!  牟尼釋師子;
 圓滿六波羅,  成就無上智;

[0945c03] At that time, Prince Siddhartha (悉達多太子 [xi da duo tai zi]), while enjoying himself with his palace consorts, suddenly thought, "Although I now have Yaśodharā (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]), Gopikā (娛閉迦 [yu bi jia]), Mṛgajā (蜜里誐惹 [mi li e re]), and other ladies, as well as sixty thousand female attendants, if I do not have a son or daughter, and I go to practice, everyone will say, 'Prince Siddhartha (悉達多太子 [xi da duo tai zi]) is not a true man.'" After leaving them, he caused Yaśodharā (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]) to become pregnant. Because of this, the prince said to the consorts, "The existence of conditioned phenomena is illusory, and the cycle of birth and death (生死輪迴 [sheng si lun hui]) is endless if the mind is not at rest. To lie on the same bed with women is like stepping into a fire, quickly bringing great suffering. Therefore, I now feel disgust and detachment." As he said this, one of the dancing girls foamed at the mouth, her limbs flailed, her hair was disheveled, and she fainted and fell to the ground. The palace ladies were terrified. The prince saw this and felt great compassion, exclaiming, "Alas! How can there be such an inauspicious sign of death?" and he spoke these verses:

"In an instant, change and a wicked form arise,
Limbs flailing, saliva flowing;
Seeing this impermanent, suffering body,
I now seek liberation."

「須臾變壞生惡相,  手足紛紜涎沫流;

[0945c16] After the prince had said these verses, he observed all sentient beings and saw that there was no solid self (我 [wo]), person (人 [ren]), sentient being (眾生 [zhong sheng]), or life-span (壽者 [shou zhe]). It was like entering a charnel ground, with nothing to love. It was like walking in mud, only increasing the foul stench. It was like raising a venomous snake, ultimately without benefit. It was like a flash of lightning, a dream, a foam, a bubble. The fundamental ignorance covers and prevents awareness. After observing this, King Śuddhodana (淨飯王 [jing fan wang]) spoke of his four dreams: one dream was of a full moon with an eclipse; the second was of the sun rising but then setting in the east; the third was of many great men coming to pay homage; and the fourth was of himself laughing and then weeping.

[0945c22] Yaśodharā (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]) also spoke of her eight dreams: the first was of a high-ranking family being scattered; the second was of an auspicious seat being broken; the third was of her armlet being damaged and falling off; the fourth was of her teeth falling out; the fifth was of her hair bun hanging loose; the sixth was of an auspicious cloud coming out of the palace; the seventh was of a full moon with an eclipse; and the eighth was of the sun rising, not yet high, but setting again in the east.

[0945c26] At that time, the prince also thought of his own five dreams: the first was of his seat being like Mount Meru (妙高山 [miao gao shan]), and he was able to sit and lie down freely; the second was of his two hands, with his left hand holding the Eastern Sea (東海 [dong hai]) and his right hand holding the Western Sea (西海 [xi hai]), and his two feet extending into the Southern Sea (南海 [nan hai]); the third was of flowers, fruits, trees, and various medicinal herbs growing up to the heavens; the fourth was of a great number of large flying birds, white-bodied and black-headed, and various small birds of different colors, coming from all four directions to stand before him, transforming into a single color and paying homage at his feet; and the fifth was of him walking and looking out from a large stone mountain. The prince thought to himself, "Since my dreams are like this, I will surely renounce the world and attain great bodhi (大菩提 [da pu ti])."

[0946a04] At that time, Yaśodharā (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]), thinking of her eight dreams, asked the prince to interpret their auspicious or ominous meaning. The prince said, "In the first dream, a high-ranking family is scattered, but our family has not been separated even for a moment; in the second dream, the auspicious seat is broken, but the seat is still as it was; in the third dream, the armlet is damaged and falls off, but it is still on your arm; in the fourth dream, the teeth fall out, but no teeth have fallen; in the fifth dream, the hair is disheveled and hanging down, but who has seen hanging hair? In the sixth dream, an auspicious cloud comes out of the palace, but an auspicious cloud and I are still in the palace; in the seventh dream, the moon is eclipsed, but it is in the sky, how can there be an eclipse? In the eighth dream, the sun rises, not yet high, but sets again in the east, but it is now the middle of the night, and the sun has not yet risen. There is nothing bad in your dreams, so why are you worried and in doubt?" The prince thought, "These eight dreams must be a sign of my leaving home." He then said to Yaśodharā (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]), "I am now going to the mountains for the sake of all sentient beings, to seek the Dharma of Nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]) and liberation." Yaśodharā (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]) said, "I will follow my husband's resolve and go as well."

[0946a16] At that time, the lord of the Trāyastriṃśa (帝釋 [di shi]) heaven and Brahmā (梵天王 [fan tian wang]) said to the prince, "Well done, well done! Quickly renounce the five desires and leave the palace early, and you will attain all-knowledge (一切智 [yi qie zhi]) when the morning star appears." The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) said, "Kauśika (憍尸迦 [jiao shi jia])! I am in a deep palace like a tiger in a pit, surrounded by the four types of soldiers: elephants, horses, chariots, and foot soldiers. The palace doors are all locked, and bells are hung everywhere to alert the guards. How can I get out?" The lord of Trāyastriṃśa (帝釋 [di shi]) said, "Just think of the vows you made for countless asaṃkhyeya (阿僧祇 [a seng qi]) kalpas in the past to cut off all suffering and save the world." As he said this, the four great heavenly kings, with their divine power, made it so that the people could not obstruct him. At that time, the lord of Trāyastriṃśa (帝釋 [di shi]) materialized a jeweled staircase and said to the yakṣa (夜叉 [ye cha]) chief, Pañcika (般唧迦 [ban ji jia]), "The holy Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) is now in a high building. You should receive him with this jeweled staircase." The yakṣa (夜叉 [ye cha]) heard this and followed the command. The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) descended and looked for Channa (飡那 [can na]) to get the horse king ready. He found Channa (飡那 [can na]) in a deep sleep and spoke these verses:

"Well done, Channa (飡那 [can na]), quickly rise,
Saddle my horse king, Kaṇṭhaka (迦蹉迦 [jia cuo jia]);
Ride to the mountains where the buddhas practice,
To seek the supreme enlightenment of the muni (牟尼 [mou ni])."

[0946a29] After saying these verses, Channa (飡那 [can na]) woke up from his sleep, rose, and clasped his hands, saying to the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), "There is no urgency, why do you need the horse king in the middle of the night to ride far away? Moreover, in this palace, there are no difficulties from soldiers, thieves, water, or fire. Why is it like this?" The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) said, "You have been serving me since long ago, why are you not complying now?" Channa (飡那 [can na]) said, "It is the middle of the night, and it is difficult to distinguish true from false. I am worried that if I make a mistake, I will incur a great crime." The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) heard this and thought to himself in silence, fearing that someone would find out, so he went to the stable himself. The lord of Trāyastriṃśa (帝釋天主 [di shi tian zhu]) held a torch in his hand to lead the way. When they reached the stable gate and pulled out the horse king, the horse was startled and stomped its feet. At that time, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) raised his hand, which had the svastika (萬字 [wan zi]) sign and a hundred thousand virtues, and made the abhaya mudrā (無畏印 [wu wei yin]). He stroked the head of the horse king and said, "Kaṇṭhaka (迦蹉迦 [jia cuo jia])! You and I have a connection. If you can take me to the Snowy Mountains (雪山 [xue shan]), the place where the buddhas practice, I will attain the fruit of supreme bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]), rain the great Dharma, and bring happiness to the world. All sentient beings will receive benefit and happiness, and your merit will be immeasurable." At that time, Kaṇṭhaka (迦蹉迦 [jia cuo jia]) accepted the command and did not move his body or feet.

These four heavenly princes came before the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), clasped their hands respectfully, and said to the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), "We know that you are going outside to practice bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]). We four heavenly beings wish to follow you." The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) asked, "Do you have power?" The first heavenly prince said, "I can carry all the earth's soil." The second heavenly prince said, "I can carry all the seas and rivers." The third heavenly prince said, "I can carry all the mountains and peaks." The fourth heavenly prince said, "I can carry all the earth, mountains, rivers, and seas without getting tired." When the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) heard this, he used his divine power to move his foot and step on the ground. The great earth shook, and the four heavenly princes could not stand and were each astonished, "Who knew that the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) had such divine power? How can we four heavenly beings atone?" At that time, Channa (飡那 [can na]) saw this divine power and led the horse king to the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]).

[0946b26] At that time, the devas of great virtue and the dragon gods (龍神 [long shen]) were saddened by the separation, and they wept and shed tears in the sky above. Channa (飡那 [can na]) said, "Why is it raining without clouds in the sky?" The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) said, "This is not rain. I am about to go out, and the devas and dragons are saddened by the separation, and they are weeping and shedding tears." Channa (飡那 [can na]) heard and accepted this, standing and clasping his hands. The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) then deeply thought of the virtues, dignity, and beneficial and joyful Dharma of the Buddha, and also thought of the kindness of his parents' nurturing, loving, and caring, thinking that if he left without telling them, it would be a failure of filial piety. Having thought this, he entered the palace and saw King Śuddhodana (淨飯王 [jing fan wang]) in a deep sleep. He walked around him once, clasped his hands, and said, "I am now going to the Snowy Mountains (雪山 [xue shan]) to seek the supreme path, to liberate the world from birth, old age, sickness, and death (生老病死 [sheng lao bing si]), and to let all sentient beings attain great liberation." [0946c05] At that time, a member of the Śākya (釋 [shi]) clan, Mahānāma (摩賀曩摩 [mo he nang mo]), saw the prince and was filled with longing, sadness, sorrow, and weeping tears. "Why is it that because of karma, you lightly abandon the royal palace?" The prince replied, "I am seeking to attain buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings." Mahānāma (摩賀曩摩 [mo he nang mo]) said, "The king commanded us to guard him for a long time, not allowing the prince to leave the palace even for a moment." The prince said, "In the past, I made the vow for bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]), and for three great asaṃkhyeya (阿僧祇 [a seng qi]) kalpas, I cultivated ten thousand practices to seek the supreme enlightenment, to save sentient beings. This royal palace is not where I belong." When Mahānāma (摩賀曩摩 [mo he nang mo]) heard these words, he became even more worried and sad, and his tears and weeping increased. He spoke in a rough and bitter voice, "Alas! Alas! The wishes of my King Śuddhodana (淨飯王 [jing fan wang]) have not come true, causing the prince to abandon the deep palace and want to go on a long journey." When Yaśodharā (耶輸陀羅 [ye shu tuo luo]) heard these words, she was shocked, afraid, fainted, and fell to the ground. After a long time, she revived and said to the prince, "Why are you leaving me today?" Gopikā (娛閉迦 [yu bi jia]), Mṛgajā (蜜里誐惹 [mi li e re]), and the other consorts wept as they went forward and said to King Śuddhodana (淨飯王 [jing fan wang]), "The prince, without reason, wants to leave the palace and go to the mountains and wilderness, as if he is possessed by a demon. There is no way to stop him. Only you, the king, must strictly admonish him and not let him go." When the king heard this, he wanted to issue a command. The lord of Trāyastriṃśa (帝釋 [di shi]), Brahmā (梵王 [fan wang]), and the heavenly princes, receiving the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), led him out of the city.

[0947a07] After saying these words, he took off his jeweled crown and his supreme clothes and said to Channa (飡那 [can na]), "Take my clothes and the horse king back to my father, the king. If I do not attain bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]), I swear I will not return." He then spoke these verses:

"You take the horse king and the jeweled clothes,
Quickly return to our country, Kapilavastu (迦毘羅 [jia pi luo]);
I will stay in the Snowy Mountains (雪山 [xue shan]) to practice the holy life,
I will not return until I attain bodhi (菩提 [pu ti])."

[0947a12] After the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) had said these verses, Channa (飡那 [can na]) heard them and wept again, saying, "In these mountains, there are many tigers, wolves, lions, and other vicious birds and beasts. How can the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) stay here alone? Also, in this wilderness, there are groves, thorns, stones, and barren land. How can the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) walk around day and night?" The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) said, "Channa (飡那 [can na])! Why are you so foolish? The bodies of sentient beings are a result of karma and delusion. The four great elements (四大 [si da]) combine and their natures contradict each other. When old age, sickness, and death (老病死 [lao bing si]) and suffering come upon the body, they do not distinguish between the noble and the humble, the rich and the poor, the beautiful and the ugly, the young and the old, enemies and friends, oneself and others. They quickly scatter and break down, and all suffer impermanence. Why should a practitioner be afraid of these dangers and difficulties?" Channa (飡那 [can na]) said, "The conduct of a Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) is indeed like this. But if the king sees me and does not see the prince, he will surely be filled with worry and sadness, like a great sickness. What will happen then?" The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) said, "I am now leaving home to practice the path of bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]), giving, upholding precepts, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom (布施持戒忍辱精進禪定智慧 [bu shi chi jie ren ru jing jin chan ding zhi hui]), and to attain the ten powers (十力 [shi li]) and four fearlessnesses (四無所畏 [si wu suo wei]). How can I cause my parents to suffer misfortune?" After saying these words, he rose from his seat, clasped his hands and bowed his head in respect. He took the sword with his hand, which was like the leaf of an utpala (優鉢羅 [you bo luo]) flower, and cut his hair, throwing it into the air. The lord of Trāyastriṃśa (帝釋天主 [di shi tian zhu]) used his great divine power to receive the hair with his hand and, along with the heavenly princes, placed it in the Trāyastriṃśa (忉利天 [dao li tian]) heaven and made offerings to it as is proper. Later, faithful Brahmins (婆羅門 [po luo men]), elders, and householders built a stupa (塔廟 [ta miao]) on this mountain.

[0947a29] After the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) had cut his hair, he asked Channa (飡那 [can na]), "What do you think? Can you stay here and practice with me?" Channa (飡那 [can na]) said, "It is not the wish of the royal family for me to stay here. How could I dare to disobey?" The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) then used his hand, which had the svastika (萬字 [wan zi]) sign and a hundred thousand virtues, to stroke the head of the horse king, Kaṇṭhaka (迦蹉迦 [jia cuo jia]), and gave him the bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]) prophecy, and sent Channa (飡那 [can na]) back to the city of Kapilavastu (迦毘羅城 [jia pi luo cheng]). After traveling for seven days and nights, at the beginning of the second watch, they arrived at the garden outside the city. The king had commanded the palace ladies and family members to go to the garden to receive them. They only saw the horse king and not the prince. The palace ladies and family members all went to the horse, hugged the horse king's neck, and wept loudly. When the horse Kaṇṭhaka (迦蹉迦 [jia cuo jia]) heard this crying, he thought of the prince and was filled with sadness and tears. After a moment, he looked back and forth and then died. Due to his past karma, he was reborn in the family of a Brahmin (婆羅門 [po luo men]) with six leaves, with sharp faculties and little defilement, intelligent and wise. After the prince attained buddhahood, he went to the Buddha's place, heard the Dharma, and attained enlightenment, and achieved the patience of non-arising (無生忍 [wu sheng ren]).

[0947b12] At that time, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) thought again, "I have now shaved my head and have the appearance of a śramaṇa (沙門 [sha men]), but how can I get a kāṣāya (袈裟衣 [jia sha yi]) robe for my body?" Having thought this, there was an elder in the city of Anupamā (阿耨波摩城 [a nou bo mo cheng]) who had a large family and immeasurable wealth, like Vaiśravaṇa (毘沙門 [pi sha men]). He had ten sons, all with handsome appearances, intelligent and sharp. They all loved to leave home and practice the pure life, and they became pratyekabuddhas (辟支迦 [pi zhi jia]) by observing the changing and impermanent external world. After their father died, their elderly mother, who was deeply faithful, made a kāṣāya (袈裟 [jia sha]) and offered it to the pratyekabuddhas (辟支迦 [pi zhi jia]). The sons said to their mother, "We will soon enter Nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]). If we accept this kāṣāya (袈裟 [jia sha]), we will have no use for it. Not far from here, there is the son of King Śuddhodana (淨飯王 [jing fan wang]) named Siddhartha (悉達多 [xi da duo]), who will soon attain Anuttara Samyak Saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti]). By offering this kāṣāya (袈裟 [jia sha]) to that Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), our elderly mother will receive great fruit and reward." After saying these words, he used his great divine power to manifest clouds, thunder, lightning, wind, and rain in the sky, and then incinerated his body in fire and entered the state of ultimate peace. At that time, the elderly mother, who was about to pass away, gave the kāṣāya (袈裟 [jia sha]) to her daughter to offer to the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]). The daughter suddenly fell ill. When she was about to pass away, she placed the kāṣāya (袈裟 [jia sha]) on a tree and said to the tree spirit, "Use this kāṣāya (袈裟 [jia sha]) to offer to that son of King Śuddhodana (淨飯王 [jing fan wang]), Siddhartha (悉達多 [xi da duo])." When the lord of Trāyastriṃśa (帝釋 [di shi]) knew of this, he transformed himself into a hunter, holding a bow and sword and wearing this kāṣāya (袈裟 [jia sha]). He saw the prince coming and sat by the roadside. The prince asked, "You are a hunter, why do you have this kauśika (憍尸迦 [jiao shi jia]) fine dharma robe on your body? Can you give it to me?" The hunter said, "I do not love this kāṣāya (袈裟 [jia sha]). I want to give it to you, but this robe is wonderful, and I am afraid that someone will steal it and harm your life." The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) said, "Everyone in the world knows my power. Just give me the robe without any worries." The lord of the Trāyastriṃśa (帝釋天主 [di shi tian zhu]) heaven then returned to his original form, bowed his head and paid homage at the feet of the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), and offered the kāṣāya (袈裟 [jia sha]) to him. After receiving it, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) put it on, but it did not fit his body. The lord of Trāyastriṃśa (帝釋 [di shi]) saw that the robe did not fit and was filled with doubt. As he was thinking this, the divine power of the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) caused the kāṣāya (袈裟 [jia sha]) to fit his body. The devas of Trāyastriṃśa (忉利 [dao li]) paid homage and made offerings. Later, Brahmins (婆羅門 [po luo men]) and elders built a stupa (塔廟 [ta miao]) at that place, where bhikṣus (苾芻 [bi chu]) would constantly come to pay homage.

[0947c08] At that time, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]), with his perfect dignified demeanor, gradually walked along and saw a ṛṣi (仙人 [xian ren]) named Bhārgava (婆哩誐嚩 [po li e mo]), who was resting his cheek on his hand with an unhappy expression. The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) asked, "What is on your mind?" The ṛṣi (仙人 [xian ren]) replied, "In this place where I live, there are many tāla (多羅 [duo luo]) trees with lush flowers and fruits that have a sweet scent, but they have suddenly withered, which makes me upset." The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) asked again, "O ṛṣi (仙人 [xian ren]), you live here to practice. Do you become sad and upset because the flowers and fruits have withered?" The ṛṣi (仙人 [xian ren]) heard this and suddenly became aware. He also saw that the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) had a handsome appearance and a dignified demeanor. He looked at him with longing and affection and asked again, "Are you a Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) who has left home?" The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) replied, "You see clearly." Bhārgava (婆里誐嚩 [po li e mo]) then broke his doubts, and his Dharma eye (法眼 [fa yan]) became pure. He asked the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) to sit down and made offerings of flowers and fruits as is proper. After a moment, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) asked again, "Is the city of Kapilavastu (迦毘羅城 [jia pi luo cheng]) far from here?" The ṛṣi (仙人 [xian ren]) replied, "From here to there is twelve yojanas (由旬 [you xun])." The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) thought, "The city is not far. If the Śākya (釋 [shi]) clansmen come, they will surely create demonic difficulties." He then left the ṛṣi (仙人 [xian ren]), crossed the Ganges (殑伽河 [qing jia he]) river, and went to the city of Rājagṛha (王舍城 [wang she cheng]). He used his skillful craft to gather tree leaves and make them into a pātra (鉢器 [bo qi]). He entered the city holding the pātra (鉢 [bo]).

[0947c21] At that time, King Bimbisāra (民彌娑囉王 [min mi suo luo wang]) was on a high building and saw the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) from a distance. He had a handsome appearance, a calm and dignified demeanor, and was wearing a dharma robe, holding an alms bowl (應器 [ying qi]) and begging for food from door to door. He exclaimed, "Among the people living in the city of Rājagṛha (王舍城 [wang she cheng]), there is no one with such a dignified demeanor and appearance. This bhikṣu (苾芻 [bi chu]) must not be a commoner or of a low-ranking family. He should be a member of a royal family who has left his position to leave home, to eliminate his sins and practice a pure life."

[0947c27] At that time, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) left the city with his pātra (鉢 [bo]) and went to a mountain. He placed the pātra (鉢 [bo]) on the ground, sat in meditation, and thought, "When King Bimbisāra (民彌娑囉王 [min mi suo luo wang]) saw me, he was inspired, so he must have other intentions." As he thought this, the king commanded his ministers, "I saw a bhikṣu (苾芻 [bi chu]) from the building who had a handsome appearance and a calm and dignified demeanor. He is not a commoner or from a low-ranking family. You must find out where he is now." He then sent envoys to the mountains, who saw the bhikṣu (苾芻 [bi chu]) sitting peacefully. When the king knew this, he personally went to see him. He looked at him and his heart was filled with joy. He then said to him, "Your appearance is very handsome. It is not suitable for you to be a bhikṣu (苾芻 [bi chu]). I have palaces, buildings, consorts, beautiful women, and the most supreme wealth for you to enjoy. Do not be a bhikṣu (苾芻 [bi chu]). What is your family name? What is your lineage? Please tell me." The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) said, "Near the Snowy Mountains (雪山 [xue shan]) is the city of Kapilavastu (迦毘羅城 [jia pi luo cheng]). My father, the king, is of the Kṣatriya (剎帝利 [sha di li]) family and is named Śuddhodana (淨飯 [jing fan]), who rules that country. I must abandon my king and father to seek bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]). If a person is foolish and greedy, even if the world and the four great seas are filled with precious treasures, it would not be enough. It is like a great fire that burns dry wood. The greedy and attached mind is also like this. Great King! I see these things as enemies, and also as venomous snakes, the root of all sorrow, suffering, and fear. Great King! Even if a great wind can shake all the mountains, it cannot move Mount Sumeru (蘇迷盧山 [su mi lu shan]). Even if all the precious treasures and supreme wealth, countries, cities, wives, sons, elephants, horses, and servants in the world can confuse the minds of all people, they cannot move my mind. Only Nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]) and liberation are the true ultimate." At that time, King Bimbisāra (民彌娑囉王 [min mi suo luo wang]) said, "What are you seeking here?" The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) said, "I am seeking Anuttara Samyak Saṃbodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提 [a nou duo luo san miao san pu ti])." The king said, "If you attain bodhi (菩提 [pu ti]), I pray that you will receive and liberate me." The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) replied, "It shall be so! It shall be so!" The king was filled with joy and returned to his place.

[0948a20] At that time, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) went to Gṛdhrakūṭa (鷲峯山 [jiu feng shan]). Not far from the side of the mountain were ṛṣis (仙人 [xian ren]) who practiced the holy life diligently and could stand on one foot for one day. When the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) heard this, he also stood on one foot for two days. The ṛṣis (仙人 [xian ren]) then used five fires to burn their bodies while standing for one day. The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) then stood for two days. At that time, the ṛṣis (仙人 [xian ren]) were all astonished, and they surrendered and praised him, saying, "This is a true practitioner, this is a great śramaṇa (大沙門 [da sha men])!" The Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) asked, "What are you seeking through your practice?" One said, "I am seeking the lord of Trāyastriṃśa (帝釋 [di shi])." Another said, "I am seeking King Brahmā (梵王 [fan wang])." Another said, "I am seeking the body of a Māra (魔界 [mo jie])." At that time, the Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa]) thought to himself, "The practices of these ṛṣis (仙人 [xian ren]) are all wrong paths and not what I should follow. I am not seeking the lord of Trāyastriṃśa (帝釋 [di shi]), not seeking King Brahmā (梵天 [fan tian]), and not seeking the Māra (魔界 [mo jie]). My original vow is to benefit and bring happiness to sentient beings and to attain buddhahood. Since their path is not true, I should abandon them."

Buddha said the scripture of Mahādevī, the fifth volume
