[0924b06] At that time, the elder Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]), having become a monk, attained the three supernatural powers (三通 [san tong]) within those three months of summer. Maniruddha (摩尼婁陀 [mo ni lou tuo]) attained the divine eye (天眼 [tian yan]). The elders Vappa (跋涪婆 [ba fu po]), Aṅgira (因耆 [yin qi]), and Nandika (難提迦 [nan ti jia]), among others, attained the fruit of arhatship (羅漢果 [luo han guo]). Ānanda (阿難 [a nan]) also attained the fruit of Stream-entry (須陀洹果 [xu tuo huan guo]). Devadatta (提婆達多 [ti po da duo]) attained the supernatural powers (神通 [shen tong]) of an ordinary person in the world.

[0924b11] At that time, the elder Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]), having attained the fruit of arhatship (羅漢果 [luo han guo]), would be in a grove, an empty room, or in the open air, at three times during the day and night, constantly exclaiming, "Oh, what happiness! (He would exclaim this three times)."

[0924b14] At that time, many monks went to the Buddha (佛 [fu]) and said, "World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), the elder Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]) Koṇḍañña (喬瞿彌子 [qiao qu mi zi]) is not happy in the World-Honored One's (世尊 [shi zun]) Dharma (法 [fa]) and does not like it. He constantly remembers his past life as a king and the pleasures of wealth. Because he constantly remembers these things, whether under a tree, in an empty room, or in the open air, he exclaims at three times, 'Oh, what happiness (He would exclaim this three times)!"

[0924b19] At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) called a monk and said to him, "Come here, monk! Go to the monk Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]) and tell him for me, 'The World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) is calling for you.'" The monk replied, "As instructed, I will not disobey." He then went to the elder Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]) and said, "Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]), the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) is calling for you."

[0924b24] When the elder Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]) heard this, he went to the Buddha (佛 [fu]). Upon arriving, he bowed at his feet and stood to one side.

Do you constantly remember the happiness of your past life as a king? Because you remember this, do you, whether under a tree, in a quiet room, or in the open air, exclaim at three times, 'Oh, what happiness! Oh, what happiness!' Is this so?"

[0924c02] Then, the elder Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]) said to the Buddha (佛 [fu]), "Yes, World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), it is so, Reverend (跋檀多 [ba tan duo])!" The Buddha (佛 [fu]) then asked, "What benefit do you see in being under a tree and exclaiming 'Oh, what happiness! Oh, what happiness!' three times?"

[0924c02] ěr shí, zhǎng lǎo pó tí lì jiā ér bái fú yán: “rú shì shì zūn! rú shì bá tán duō! ” fú fù gào yán: “rǔ jiàn hé lì? huò zài shù xià, nǎi zhì sān shí chàng rú shì yán: ‘wū hū kuài lè! wū hū kuài lè! ’ ”

[0924c05] Then, the elder Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]) said to the Buddha (佛 [fu]), "World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), in the past, when I was at home, ruling as king with the Kṣatriya (剎利 [sha li]) anointment, there were seven layers of walls surrounding my palace to protect us. There were also seven layers of elephant (象 [xiang]) soldiers, seven layers of horse (馬 [ma]) soldiers, seven layers of chariot (車 [che]) soldiers, and seven layers of infantry (步軍 [bu jun]). They were all wearing armor and holding weapons, such as bows and arrows, swords and spears, shields, vajra (金剛 [jin gang]) maces, great iron clubs, lances (矛鑹 [mao cuan]), iron wheels, three-pointed axes, and other weapons, surrounding me. Outside the walls were seven layers of water moats. With such protection and such a defense, I would still be terrified at night if I heard any sounds, and I would not feel at ease. My hair would stand on end, I would constantly feel ashamed, and my senses would be agitated. World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), now, whether I am under a tree, in a quiet room, or in the open air, when I hear the sounds of various fierce beasts at night, I am not terrified, my hair does not stand on end, I have no shame, and my senses are not agitated. Therefore, I constantly sit alone and contemplate, and my heart thinks, 'I have now gained a great benefit. The World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) is now my Great Master (大師 [da shi]), and he teaches the Dharma (法 [fa]) that he has awakened to himself. Through this Dharma (法 [fa]), I was able to leave home and practice brahmacarya (梵行 [fan xing]). Many precepts have taken hold of me, and I have become a wonderful practitioner. I have now lived well and will die well.' Therefore, World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), I compare the happiness of my past life as a king and my wealthy life to the happiness of leaving home today. The happiness of sitting in a quiet place, the happiness of contemplation and insight, the happiness of silent concentration, and the happiness of the śramaṇa (沙門 [sha men]) state. Because I remember this, whether I am under a tree, in a quiet room, or in the open air, I am content and have few desires, begging for food from others. My hair does not stand on end. Like a mountain deer, my heart is free, and there is no obstruction to my sitting, lying down, or staying. At three times, I exclaim, 'Oh, what happiness!' He would exclaim this three times."

[0924c27] At that time, the elder Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]) said a gāthā (偈 [ji]) in front of the Buddha (佛 [fu]) and the great assembly:

"In the past, I was in a deep palace, with seven layers of very high walls. The watchtowers and battlements were well-protected, and there were also seven layers of moats. The army stood guard with weapons, protecting me day and night. With all this self-protection, my body and mind were still not at peace. Now, in front of the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), there is no one to protect me. In a quiet place, or under a tree in the mountain forest, as a Buddha's (佛 [fu]) son, Bhaddiya (婆提迦 [po ti jia]), all people protect each other. Whether I am walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, I am always at peace, and my heart has no clinging. In the past, I rode a great elephant (象 [xiang]) in the palace, wearing beautiful silk clothes. I ate fine rice and delicious food, and wonderful meat dishes. Now I can sit or lie down as I please, in a quiet place, wearing a dūṣa (糞掃衣 [fen sao yi]) robe. I have renounced love and pulled out the root of suffering. Whatever I wish to do, I do it as I please."

[0925a12] At that time, because of this matter, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) again said a gāthā (偈 [ji]):

"If a person knows about life and is not distressed, they also will not worry about death. If they can be brave and see the true reality, they will not be afraid even if they fall into a sea of suffering. Monks who have already cut off the love of existence have cut off all things. The afflictions of birth (生 [sheng]) and death (死 [si]) are all extinguished, and thus there is no more future existence."

[0925a12] ěr shí, shì zūn yīn cǐ shì gù, fù shuō jì yán:

[0925a20] At that time, the monks said to the Buddha (佛 [fu]), "World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), what good roots did this elder Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]) plant in the past to be born into the family of a great and noble Śākya (釋種 [shi zhong])? He had abundant wealth and possessions and lacked nothing. What karma did he create to become the king of the Śākya (釋種 [shi zhong])? What karma did he create to be able to leave home, receive the full precepts, and attain the fruit of arhatship (羅漢果 [luo han guo])? And the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) also predicted, 'Monks, among the śrāvaka (聲聞 [sheng wen]) disciples, Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]) is the foremost in leaving home from a noble background.'"

[0925a27] At that time, the Buddha (佛 [fu]) said to the assembly of monks, "Monks, I remember a long, long time ago, there was a poor person who lived by begging. When he arrived at that city, all the beggars there scolded him, saying, 'Where did you come from to get here?' They then prevented him from begging.

At that time, a householder (長者 [zhang zhe]) in the city of Vārāṇasī (波羅㮈城 [bo luo nai cheng]) lost a copper bowl. The householder (長者 [zhang zhe]) searched for the copper bowl but could not find it. Because he was looking for the bowl, he went to another village. At that time, the beggar found the copper bowl in a pile of dung, hung it on the top of his staff, and went into the city of Vārāṇasī (波羅㮈城 [bo luo nai cheng]). He went from street to street, from alley to alley, from intersection to intersection, and from corner to corner, exclaiming, 'Whose is this copper bowl? The one who recognizes it, please take it.' He wandered everywhere, looking for the owner, but could not find him. Since he could not find the owner, he went to Brahmadatta (梵德王 [fan de wang]), the king, and gave it to him. The householder (長者 [zhang zhe]) later heard that a person had found a copper bowl in a pile of dung, hung it on his staff, and had gone into the city of Vārāṇasī (波羅㮈城 [bo luo nai cheng]), exclaiming from street to street and alley to alley, 'Whose is this copper bowl?' [0925c17] "At one time, a person was secretly eating a Modak (摩呼荼迦 [mo hu tu jia]), which is a sweet dumpling. The beggar king snatched the Modak (摩呼荼迦 [mo hu tu jia]) from that person and ran away with it. The king's retinue of five hundred beggars chased after the king until they were far away, and they all became exhausted. After they were exhausted, they all went back. The beggar king, being strong and healthy, ran without getting tired. After going even farther, he turned his head and saw that the five hundred beggars were all gone. After he could no longer see them, he entered a garden, washed his hands with water, and sat to one side, intending to eat the food. Before he ate, a feeling of regret arose in his heart: 'I am not good. Why did I snatch this food from that person? And I also deceived my followers. This food is a lot, and I cannot eat it all. If there are any holy people in the world who know my intention and come here, I will share it with them.' After he had this thought, a Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) named Śāntabhadra (善賢 [shan xian]) flew through the sky and landed in front of him, not far away. The man saw the Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) from a distance. His demeanor was graceful, his steps were even and measured, and his movements were appropriate, neither too fast nor too slow. After seeing this, a pure faith arose in his heart towards the Pratyekabuddha (辟支 [pi zhi]). After his heart became pure, he thought, 'The poverty and low status I have received in the past, and even now, are all because I have not encountered such a field of merit. I have not given alms, paid respects, or made offerings to such a person. If I had encountered such a field of merit in the past, I would not be in such distress today, and I would not have to live by being forced and oppressed by others. I will now offer this Modak (摩呼荼 [mo hu tu]) food to this ṛṣi (仙人 [xian ren]). I wonder if this ṛṣi (仙人 [xian ren]) will accept it? If he accepts it, I wish that in the future, I will be free from this poor and distressed body.' After he had this thought, he took the Modak (摩呼荼迦 [mo hu tu jia]) food and offered it to the ṛṣi (仙人 [xian ren]). The Pratyekabuddhas (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) have such a Dharma (法 [fa]) that they only manifest their supernatural powers to teach sentient beings, and they have no other Dharma (法 [fa]). The Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) accepted the Modak (摩呼荼迦 [mo hu tu jia]) food. Out of compassion for this person, he flew into the sky from that place. When the man saw the Pratyekabuddha (辟支世尊 [pi zhi shi zun]) flying away, a great joy filled his entire body, and he could not contain himself. With a joyful heart, he held his hands in a gesture of respect and bowed from afar at the feet of the Venerable Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]). After this bow, he made this vow: 'I wish that in future lives, I will always encounter a World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) like this one, or one who is even more excellent. I wish that when I hear the Dharma (法 [fa]) that such a World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) teaches, I will quickly understand and realize it. [0926a19] The Buddha (佛 [fu]) said to the monks, "Monks, if any of you have doubts about who the beggar king of the city of Vārāṇasī (波羅㮈城 [bo luo nai cheng]) was, who gave the Modak (摩呼荼迦 [mo hu tu jia]) to the Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]) at that time, do not think otherwise. It was the monk Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]). Because of the karma from the beggar king giving the Modak (摩呼荼 [mo hu tu]) food to the Pratyekabuddha (辟支佛 [pi zhi fu]), he was born into the great and noble Śākya (釋種 [shi zhong]) family in this life, and his wealth and possessions were abundant and he lacked nothing. At that time, he made this vow: 'I wish that in future lives, I will rule as king among noble and powerful families.' Because of that karma, he attained the position of king among the Śākya (釋種 [shi zhong]) in this life. He also made the wish, 'I wish that in every life, I will not fall into the evil paths.' Because of that karma, he has never been born into the evil paths. He has always been born among humans and devas (天 [tian]), and he has experienced much happiness in his cycles of existence. He also made this wish: 'I wish that in future lives, I will always encounter a Pratyekabuddha (辟支世尊 [pi zhi shi zun]) like this one, or one who is even more excellent, and I wish that when I hear the sūtra (經法 [jing fa]) that such a World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) teaches, I will quickly know and understand it.' Because of that karma, he has now met me, left home, received the full precepts, and attained the fruit of arhatship (羅漢果 [luo han guo]). I also made the prediction: 'Among my śrāvaka (聲聞 [sheng wen]) disciples, Bhaddiya (婆提唎迦 [po ti li jia]) is the foremost in leaving home from a noble family.'
