[0873c20] This young man, Upatiṣya (優波坻沙摩那婆 [you bo chi sha mo na po]), was the eldest among his brothers. He was skilled in recitation and also taught others. There was nothing in the four Vedas (四韋陀 [si wei tuo]) that he did not understand. He was accomplished in recitation, was skilled in explaining other treatises such as those of the Nirgranthas (尼揵陀 [ni qian tuo]) and Kaikakṣa (雞晝婆 [ji zhou po]), and could explain each of their names. He understood matters of past lives and was skilled at discriminating them. He was unhindered in the five fields of knowledge. The treatise on prophecy was deeply ingrained in his mind. He was fully accomplished in the sixty-four arts, and was skilled at understanding the marks of a great man (大丈夫相 [da zhang fu xiang]). This young man was by nature gentle and his mind was upright. He was always filled with loving-kindness and compassion, and was deeply weary of worldly matters. He regretted his past sins. In the past, he had met many Buddhas, planted various good roots, and achieved many things. He was skilled at cultivating himself, was always happy and diligent, was content with food, was weary of afflictions, and was striving towards Nirvāṇa. He was unhindered in his reasoning, disliked all becoming, was accomplished in all practices, had destroyed the fetters, and had reached a mature stage. He had only one life left. He was intelligent and skillful, thoughtful and insightful, and understood all dharmas. When his parents were managing the household, they would always consult him before they did anything.

[0874a04] At that time, not far from the great city of Rājagṛha (王舍大城 [wang she da cheng]), there was a village called Kākaḷaka (拘離迦 [ju li jia]). In that village, there was a great householder (大婆羅門居士 [da po luo men ju shi]) of a Brahmin family. This great householder lived in that village and was so wealthy that his house was no different from the palace of the Heavenly King Vaiśravaṇa (毘沙門天王 [pi sha men tian wang]). This Brahmin had a son named Kolita (拘離多 [ju li duo]), whose appearance was dignified and upright, and was a joy for all to see. He had a thorough understanding of all treatises, could also teach others, and even understood the marks of a great man. The young man Upatiṣya (優波坻沙童子 [you bo chi sha tong zi]) was a close friend of his. The two of them loved each other, were always happy, and had cheerful expressions. If they were separated for even a short time, they would become greatly saddened. In their past thousand lives, they had been bound by love. There is a verse that says:

Past causes and conditions cultivated them together, Their two hearts turned to each other in friendship, Because of this love, They were like lotuses born in water. Upatiṣya (優波低沙 [you bo di sha]) and Kolita (拘離多 [ju li duo]), The two revered each other, If they were not seen for a short time, Their hearts would be filled with vexation and remorse.

Chapter 47 of the Sutra of the Collection of the Buddha's Past Deeds

[0874a04] 爾時王舍大城,去城不遠有一聚落,名拘離迦.於彼村內,有一種姓大婆羅門居士,是大居士,依彼村住,大富饒財,乃至彼家,猶毘沙門天王宮殿,無有異也.彼婆羅門,產生一子,名拘離多,容顏端正,眾所樂觀,一切書論,皆悉通曉,復能教他,乃至能了丈夫之相.其優波坻沙童子,共為親友.時彼二人,互相愛念,常懷歡喜,和顏悅色,若少時別,大生愁惱.彼等往昔千生之中,愛戀相縛.而有偈言:

“宿世因果相熏習,  二心展轉互相親,
 以如是等愛心故,  猶如蓮花生在水.
 優波低沙拘離多,  彼二遞互相愛敬,
 若經少時不相見,  腹中煩惋自懊惱.”

 yōu bō dī shā jū lí duō,  bǐ èr dì hù xiāng ài jìng,
 ruò jīng shǎo shí bù xiāng jiàn,  fù zhōng fán wǎn zì ào nǎo.”

"su shi yin guo xiang xun xi, er xin zhan zhuan hu xiang qin,

you bo di sha ju li duo, bi er di hu xiang ai jing,
ruo jing shao shi bu xiang jian, fu zhong fan wan zi ao nao."
