[0844b19] "At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]), after accepting and finishing the meal from Uruvilvā Kāśyapa (優婁頻螺迦葉 [you lou pin luo jia ye]), returned to that forest, walking and staying. At that time, there was an annual sacrificial ritual that Uruvilvā Kāśyapa (優婁頻螺迦葉 [you lou pin luo jia ye]) always held. When the time came, all the people of the Magadha (摩伽陀國 [mo jia tuo guo]) kingdom brought various kinds of fine and delicious food—food that is chewed, licked, and sucked—and prepared it all. The next day, they were all going to come to the dwelling place of Uruvilvā Kāśyapa (優婁頻螺迦葉 [you lou pin luo jia ye]).

[0844b25] "At that time, Uruvilvā Kāśyapa (優婁頻螺迦葉 [you lou pin luo jia ye]), on that night, was in his room thinking, 'Tomorrow, a great assembly of all the people of the Magadha (摩伽陀國 [mo jia tuo guo]) kingdom will gather, and they will have prepared various kinds of innumerable food to come to me for the sacrificial ritual. If this great virtuous Śramaṇa (大德沙門 [da de sha men]), Gautama (瞿曇 [qu tan]), were to display his supreme supernatural Dharma (法 [fa]) in front of this great multitude, my offerings and reputation would all go to him, and mine would be reduced. I hope that this great Śramaṇa (大沙門 [da sha men]) will not come tomorrow.' At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) knew what Uruvilvā Kāśyapa (優婁頻螺迦葉 [you lou pin luo jia ye]) was thinking. After that night had passed, he went to Uttarakuru (欝單越 [yu dan yue]), where he begged for food and ate it by the great lake Anavatapta (阿耨達大池 [a nou da da chi]). After a short period of quiet contemplation by the great lake (大池 [da chi]), he returned to his original forest, walking and staying. At that time, Uruvilvā Kāśyapa (優婁頻螺迦葉 [you lou pin luo jia ye]), after that night had passed, went to the Buddha (佛 [fu]), the World-Honored One's (世尊 [shi zun]) place after his meal. When he arrived at the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) place, he said to the Buddha (佛 [fu]), 'Great Virtuous Śramaṇa (大德沙門 [da de sha men])! The mealtime has arrived, and the food has also been prepared, but I wonder why the Śramaṇa (沙門 [sha men]) did not come? Although this happened, I have not forgotten the most delicious food, and I have saved a portion for you now.'

[0844c11] "At that time, the Buddha (佛 [fu]) said to that Kāśyapa (迦葉 [jia ye]), 'O Kāśyapa (迦葉 [jia ye])! Last night, when you were sitting alone in your quiet room, was it not the case that you were thinking, "Tomorrow, at my dwelling place, I will hold the annual sacrificial ritual. All the men and women of the Magadha (摩伽陀國 [mo jia tuo guo]) kingdom will bring various kinds of fine food and drink to me. I fear that this great virtuous Śramaṇa (大德沙門 [da de sha men]), Gautama (瞿曇 [qu tan]), might display his supernatural abilities and the Dharma (法 [fa]) of the superior person in front of the multitude, and then all my offerings and reputation will go to that great Śramaṇa (大沙門 [da sha men]), and mine will be reduced. I secretly hoped that he would not come tomorrow." O Kāśyapa (迦葉 [jia ye])! At that time, knowing your thoughts, after that night had passed, I ascended into the air and went to Uttarakuru (欝單越 [yu dan yue]) to beg for food. After obtaining it, I came to Anavatapta (阿耨達池 [a nou da chi]) lake, ate as is appropriate, and after walking there for a while, I returned to this forest to spend the night.' At that time, Uruvilvā Kāśyapa (優婁頻螺迦葉 [you lou pin luo jia ye]) thought, 'This great Śramaṇa (大沙門 [da sha men]) has great divine and authoritative power! The transformation is great, but he has not yet attained the fruit of Arhatship (阿羅漢果 [a luo han guo]) as I have now (this is what Nīśāśe (尼沙塞 [ni sha sai]) said).' At that time, Uruvilvā Kāśyapa (優婁頻螺迦葉 [you lou pin luo jia ye]) held an annual great assembly at his dwelling place on a day called the Yìsù (翼宿日 [yi su ri]) day. On the day of that assembly, tens of millions of people from the Magadha (摩伽陀國 [mo jia tuo guo]) kingdom would gather, and there would also be a market where people could buy what they needed. At that time, Uruvilvā Kāśyapa (優婁頻螺迦葉 [you lou pin luo jia ye]) thought, 'If the Śramaṇa (沙門 [sha men]) comes here tomorrow, all the people will watch him and not prepare the vegetarian feast for us.' Having thought this, he went to the Buddha's (佛 [fu]) place and said to the Buddha (佛 [fu]), 'Great Virtuous Śramaṇa (大德沙門 [da de sha men])! Tomorrow, there will be a great assembly at my place of cultivation, with hundreds of thousands of living beings gathered, and it will be very noisy. However, the great Śramaṇa (大沙門 [da sha men]) loves quietness and always walks in a pure and secluded place. Śramaṇa (沙門 [sha men])! You can move from here and find another quiet place to stay (this is what the Saṅghika (僧祇 [seng qi]) school said).' At that time, the World-Honored One (世尊 [shi zun]) moved from that dwelling place and went to the Chālīkā (差梨迦 [cha li jia]) forest. When he arrived there, he thought of the four Kālodaka (迦婁羅王 [jia lou luo wang]) kings (whose names were 'Touching-The-Water-Bird'), and also the four Dhṛtarāṣṭra (提頭賴吒 [ti tou lai zha]) dragon kings, the four water-god dragons (四水神龍 [si shui shen long]), the four great heavenly kings (四大天王 [si da tian wang]), the lord of the heavens, Śakra (帝釋天主 [di shi tian zhu]), and all the other heavens of the desire realm (欲界 [yu jie]), as well as the lord of the Sahā (娑婆 [suo po]) world, the great Brahmā (大梵天 [da fan tian]) king, and so on. He thought of them all.

But just as he was about to reach the Buddha (佛 [fu]), the Tathāgata (如來 [ru lai]) suddenly used his supernatural power to conjure a tall, steep mountain in front of him.
